2014 Premiere Stakes Tips & Selections

Royal Randwick Racecourse hosts Sydney’s biggest Group 1 meeting on Saturday with Epsom Handicap Day, one of the major supporting races being the 2014 Premiere Stakes.

John O'Shea's Generalife is our pick for the 2014 Premiere Stakes winner.

There are just seven horses left in the mix for the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) after the Joseph Pride-trained Rain Affair was scratched from the race.

Five of the runners are available at single figure bets in the latest Premiere Stakes odds with Ladbrokes.com.au, led by Famous Seamus at $2.50

The Noel Mayfield-Smith gelding has drawn the widest barrier with Tim Clark to ride but has been the early 2014 Premiere Stakes favourite since the market opened.

The six-year-old has won nine of his career starts, including the Group 1 BTC Cup over the same distance as the Premiere back in May.

Tim Clark also rode Famous Seamus on his only spring start this season, Group 2 The Shorts (1100m), in which he delivered a late charge in a top run to take out a minor placing.

Also under $10 to win the Premiere are the likes of I’ve Got The Looks ($3.70) who will enjoy the rails run after drawing barrier one, Listed Winter Stakes (1400m) winner Generalife ($4.60), Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) winner Sincero ($8), and the Gerald Ryan-trained Charlie Boy ($9).

With so many good betting prospects in the mix, below are our top tips for the Premiere Stakes so you get a better idea of who to back in Randwick’s Race 6 (3:20pm) this Saturday.

#4 Generalife ($4.60)

John O’Shea’s gelding will start from the middle barrier under James McDonald and is our Premiere Stakes pick. The five-year-old has placed in all five of his last starts, including a winning hat trick from his last three, which includes the Listed Winter and Civic Stakes’.  Money has been coming in for this market mover, who’s been shortened from $5.50 to $4.60.

#2 Famous Seamus ($2.50)

Favourite in the fixed-odds betting market for a reason, Mayfield-Smith’s gelding has a real chance at taking out the Premiere despite drawing the widest barrier. Third in The Shorts his last time out, Famous Seamus looks to be over the bad spell of form that plagued him after his BTC Cup win in winter.

#8 I’ve Got The Looks ($3.70)

Peter & Paul Snowden’s mare has a chance of upsetting the boys on the field after drawing barrier one, which means she’ll enjoy a rails run under Hugh Bowman. She’ll also carry a two kilo less weight than her rivals, which could help her come across the finish line first.
