Edward Manifold Stakes 2014 Betting Tips

Flemington Racecourse hosts Melbourne’s latest Group 1 race meeting on Saturday with Turnbull Stakes Day lighting up the track, one of the day’s major support events being the 2014 Edward Manifold Stakes.

There are now 14 three-year-old fillies in the mix for this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) following the scratching of the Peter Moody-trained Thinking Of You who goes to Sydney for the $400,000 Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick instead against a smaller field.

With the undefeated Thinking Of You officially ruled out, favourite in the Edward Manifold Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $3 is the also unbeaten Maastricht.

She jumps from gate three with Dwayne Dunn riding and has won both of her career starts to date, the Team Hawkes-trained filly last seen winning over 1400m at Bendigo on September 10.

It’s been best to steer clear of the favourites in this race in recent years however as none have saluted for the punters since Alinghi (2004).

Also at single figures in Edward Manifold Stakes betting are the likes of the progressive Street Cry filly Pittsburgh Flyer ($5.50), the Mick Price-trained Royal Ocean ($8.50) coming off a Listed Morphettville Guineas win, the lightly raced Little Hottie ($8.50) for Michael Kent and Turffontein filly Fontein Ruby ($9).

With so many live wire chances in the mix, below we have our inside Edward Manifold Stakes tips so you know who to back and who to sack in Flemington Race 6 (3:40pm) this weekend.

#7 Pittsburgh Flyer ($5.50)

Tipping the form around Thinking Of You to stack up even in her absence with this Lee & Shannon Hope-trained Seymour galloper coming off a third to the scratched filly at Caulfield a month ago. She’s had three runs and finished in the money every time including a win at home to kick off her career in August. Up in class but deserving of a shot and has a nice barrier five draw here.

#2 Fontein Ruby ($9)

One of two in the race for Robert Smerdon, and a top chance. She won consecutive races earlier including a first-up victory over the 1400m here on August 9. Last start was fifth to Thinking Of You and finishing fast. Ran like she wanted more and she gets that here going up to a mile so could be hard to beat.

#1 Veuvelicious ($17)

Drawn wide but ready to improve and distance to overcome the draw. A daughter of Northern Meteor, she is based at Kyneton and may have beaten only one home when 14th to Thinking Of You last start but that was lumping around 60kg. Jockey Damien Oliver stays on but she’ll relish dropping back to 55.5kg under set weights and will be fitter three runs in so adds value.
