There are 16 in the mix for this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m), scheduled to jump at 5:00pm as the penultimate event on the Flemington program on Saturday.

Four of the mares in the field are at single figures to win in the latest Blazer Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, the favourite of which is Suavito at a quote of $5.50.

Nigel Blackiston’s locally-trained Thorn Park mare won two back over this distance at Caulfield before a last start second behind Star Fashion, again over the 1400m at Caulfield, on September 20 that she’ll be looking to go one better than.

She’s got Group 1 form, including a sixth to Rising Romance in the ATC Oaks over the mile and a half, so is proven in good company over more distance.

Also under $10 to win are the likes of Pat Hyland’s Let’s Elope Stakes fourth placegetter Bonaria ($6.50) in gate two, early market mover Politeness ($6.50) who also ran second in a Group mares race last time out and the Darren Weir-trained Group 1 Schweppes Oaks winner May’s Dream ($8.50).

So which of these mares are genuine contenders vs the pretenders?

1st

#4 Politeness ($6.50)

Robert Smerdon-trained daughter of Street Sense is second-up here after a nice fourth to Girl Guide in the Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield two weeks ago. She was in good form during the autumn including a Group 3 PJ Bell win at Royal Randwick. Obvious Flemington isn’t her track as she’s finished in the money just once in five starts but think she’s ready to break the hoodoo. Will be fitter for her last run too so expect improvement.

2nd

#2 Bonaria ($6.50)

Bonnie mare has had three runs for the season including her Let’s Elope fourth to Commanding Jewel. Three weeks since that run so she’s had time to freshen-up and should be ready to fire on a track she’s won at three times previously. Momentum is a great thing and her run last time out was a beauty that she can capitalise on here.

3rd

#12 Nautical ($12)

Went out at big odds ($51) when resuming at the track in the Let’s Elope only to run third to a Group 1 winner in Commanding Jewel. She’s a previous winner at this track and distance too and think second-up she can pull out another top three effort.
