Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
A field of 16 plus two emergencies will run in the 2014 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington Racecourse after David Hayes & Tom Dabernig scratched Crackerjack King from the race.
The Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) is the featured race of Turnbull Stakes Day this Saturday, with plenty of talented horses lining up to put your money on.
Lucia Valentina opened the market at odds of $8 with Ladbrokes.com.au but the market mover has already shortened to $5 favourite.
Perhaps punters are expecting the Kris Lees-trained mare to deliver another Group 1 Vinery Stakes (2000m) extraordinary performance, in which the four-year-old was so far off the leaders with 800m to go yet was able to come home with a win running away.
Lucia Valentina won her first spring race at the beginning of September in the form of the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) and despite coming sixth on her last start in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) Lees was very pleased with her fast finishing run and she came through the race very well, leaving her in great form for the 2014 Turnbull Stakes.
It’s a tough betting battle for the Group One Flemington race, with four other single figure hopes on the field:
- #8 Puissance De Lune ($6.50) – Darren Weir’s seven-year-old will get a great run after drawing barrier two, which has given her short odds for the Turnbull. Third on his last two starts, which were both Group Ones, has this horse heading in on great form.
- #6 Silent Achiever ($7) – Roger James’ mare opened the Turnbull Stakes betting market as favourite she was lengthened from $5.50 to $7. The six-year-old has run in Group Ones on all five of her last starts, two of which she won during winter, but has just missed out on a placing during her last three.
- #2 Happy Trails ($7.50) – Paul Beshara’s defending champ has seen his price lengthen since the market opened despite drawing the ideal barrier one, which means the gelding will enjoy the rails run under Michael Rodd as he vies for his second Turnbull Stakes win. Experienced a rocky start to his spring racing campaign after being off for six months due to injury but managed runner-up his last time out in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m).
- #17 Stipulate ($8.50) – Hayes & Dabernig’s other horse began as first emergency runner when the field opened but was bumped to the main field after Crackerjack King was scratched. The Heatherlie Handicap (1700m) winner will start from barrier 10 (better than Crackerjack’s 19) under Craig Williams.
With such a large field, there is a good chance one of the runners offering double figure odds will cause an upset in the 2014 Turnbull Stakes.
Gai Waterhouse’s The Offer ($13), current early 2014 Melbourne Cup favourite, may have been drawn wide in barrier 15 but the gelding will enjoy a trip up in distance, performing a lot better over the 2000m mark than below.
