2014 Blazer Stakes Betting: Suavito Narrow Favourite

In an open market for the mares’ feature on Turnbull Stakes Day at Flemington this Saturday, Nigel Blackiston’s locally-trained runner Suavito is the narrow favourite as she shoots for her maiden black type win.

The four-year-old daughter of Thorn Park is one of 16 hopefuls making up the field for this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m) and pays $5.50 through Ladbrokes.com.au to win.

Drawn just better than mid-field in gate seven with James Winks to ride, Suavito is third-up for the season following two nice 1400m Caulfield runs.

Twice Group 1 performed in Sydney when seventh in the Vinery Stud Stakes and sixth in the Australian Oaks, she won first-up on August 30 with Damien Oliver in the saddle before narrowly going down to Star Fashion on September 20 when Winks took over.

She carried 58kg that day and gets a nice weight relief under the set weights plus penalties conditions on Saturday with a drop back to 54kg that should see her flying in the finish.

Despite the big field there are just three other single figure hopes in the latest Blazer Stakes betting markets with:

  • #2 Bonaria ($7) – Gun gate two draw and Michael Rodd riding Pat Hyland’s Redoute’s Choice six-year-old. The older mares have a nice record in the race and her last start effort when fourth to Commanding Jewel in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes at this track and distance saw her beaten only half a length. She finished off well there and the form coming out of the race has held, and Flemington’s her pet track.
  • #4 Politeness ($7) – Early market mover, this Robert Smerdon-trained Street Sense four-year-old is yet to win from five starts at Flemington but has a nice second-up record (3-1-1-0) and resumed last start with a fourth in the Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield that she’ll be improving on over more distance here. She stuck it out in the How Now and did her best running late, her turn of foot the key to success here again.
  • #1 May’s Dream ($8) – Gate four draw for Darren Weir’s former Group 1 winner. Last season as a four-year-old this daughter of New Approach won the Australasian Oaks over 2000m in Adelaide and she came back with a seventh in the How Now with improvement to come at Flemignton.

Outside of those under $10 are then a host of other livewire chances at juicer Blazer Stakes odds including the Robbie Griffiths-trained Group 3 winner Girl In Flight ($11), Let’s Elope Stakes third placegetter Nautical ($11), Weir’s other runner Lady Cumquat ($12) with Group 3 winning form back in New Zealand and a nice record over the 1400m, and the Michael Kent-trained Scratchy Bottom ($13) who was third to May’s Dream in the Australasian Oaks before a last start second back in May behind Kushadasi in the Group 1 SA Derby (2500m).
