Chris Waller’s exciting filly Winx has a wide barrier to overcome if she’s to atone for a last start loss when coming up with her Tea Rose conqueror again in Saturday’s Flight Stakes 2014 at Royal Randwick Racecourse.
Just nine three-year-old fillies make up the final field for his weekend’s $400,000 Group 1 Coolmore Flight Stakes (1600m) on Epsom Handicap Day.
Dominating the Flight Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au are sure to be the first two over the line in the race’s traditional lead-up, the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) run at the same track a fortnight ago.
The Tea Rose Stakes is the key lead-up for the mile showdown too with nine Flight Stakes winners in the past 11 years, the race not run in 2007), having had their previous start in the Tea Rose.
That day Waller’s previously undefeated daughter of Street Cry Winx, coming off a Group 2 Furious Stakes victory over 1200m in the wet, jumped the odds-on favourite.
She was defeated by three-quarters of a length however in an upset by the John Thompson-trained First Seal.
The duo face off again on Saturday in the Flight Stakes at elite level then with Winx to be ridden by Hugh Bowman, back in the saddle replacing her Tea Rose hoop Jason Collett, from out wide in barrier eight.
Bowman has an outstanding record in the race boosting Winx’s claims having ridden four Flight Stakes winners to victory from eight rides.
Fastnet Rock filly First Seal meanwhile has barrier five in the Group 1 with Blake Shinn staying on looking for back-to-back feature wins on the up-and-comer.
Along with Winx, Waller will also saddle-up Dynamic Rock from barrier two, the filly in her Group debut after a fourth to Abduction in last Saturday’s Listed Reginald Allen Quality (1400m).
The other headline acceptor is the Peter Moody-trained Thinking Of You who is yet to taste defeat.
She’s won her opening two career starts and on Saturday will jump from gate three with Josh Parr riding in the place of Luke Nolen as she looks to retain her undefeated status.
The Thorn Park filly is in black type company for the first time however, her latest winning effort being over the 1400m at Caulfield in a handicap against her own time where she carried 54.5kg to defeat Pickin’ Time by two and a quarter lengths.
Other notable Flight Stakes hopes this year then include the Lee Curtis-trained Press Report (barrier 7) who was far from disgraced when seventh to Hallowed Crown in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) last time out and Lady Sharapova (barrier 6) for Team Hawkes who is out to improve on a disappointing Tea Rose effort.
Gai Waterhouse then rounds out the Flight Stakes field with a trio from her Tulloch Lodge stables.
Waterhouse’s contenders are Heritage Stakes runner-up Echo Gal (barrier four), the rails-drawn Twirl racing for the first time in two months and Reginald Allen third over the line Muscaovado in the outside gate nine.
