Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Darren Weir’s Group 1 winning mare May’s Dream is one of the top rated final acceptors for the 2014 Blazer Stakes at Flemington Racecourse this Saturday.
The New Approach four-year-old is one of 16 hopefuls making up the field for this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m) which runs as Race 8 on Turnbull Stakes Day on the weekend.
Drawn in gate four with Brad Rawiller to ride she’s second-up for the season following a seventh to Girl Guide in the unsuitably short Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on September 20.
Up over more distance she’s a better shot on Saturday in the Blazer Stakes then especially as May’s Dream is undefeated second-up with three wins from as many starts two runs into her campaigns.
Before her break the Wangoom-based mare was in top form including a Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2000m) win in Adelaide on April 26.
Weir has also accepted for Lonhspresso (barrier six), the Lonhro five-year-old out to improve on two below par runs this season including a 12th in the Bobbie Lewis last time out.
Another Blazer Stakes runner that ran in the Schweppes Australasian Oaks during the autumn is third placegetter Scratchy Bottom.
She has a wide gate 13 draw to overcome first-up on Saturday however with Dwayne Dunn to ride the Michael Kent-trained Sebring four-year-old.
After the Oaks Scratchy Bottom was stepped up in distance again and was a nice second behind Kushadasi in the Group 1 SA Derby (2500m) on May 3, Saturday her first run since and she’s undefeated first-up (2-2-0-0).
The next highest rated mare in the Blazer Stakes field after May’s Dream meanwhile is the Pat Hyland-trained Bonaria who is drawn well in gate two with Michael Rodd engaged for the ride.
Six-year-old Bonaria was a close fourth behind Commanding Jewel in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) at the track three weeks ago when defeated just over half a length, an effort she’s tipped to improve on here with a run now under her belt for the season.
Drawn at the other end of the field with the wide barrier 14 to overcome is then the Robert Smerdon-trained Politeness.
Craig Williams rides the Street Sense four-year-old taking over for Mark Zahra who was aboard the Group 3 winner when she returned running fourth in the How Now Stakes.
Other notable Blazer Stakes acceptors include Nigel Blackiston’s local Thorn Park mare Suavito coming off two good runs including a 1400m win at Caulfield in August, Let’s Elope Stakes third placegetter Nautical and Robbie Griffiths’ always honest five-year-old Nadeem Lass with the outside barrier.
