Peter Moody’s undefeated young filly Thinking Of You has opened short-priced favourite to win the Edward Manifold Stakes 2014 in Melbourne this weekend.
Despite a wide barrier 12 of 15 draw and also being accepted for the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) in Sydney on the same day, the bookies are keeping the daughter of Thorn Park safe in the markets for the $200,000 Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington Racecourse.
With Moody having earmarked her for the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on October 11, he is leaning towards keeping her home for the Edward Manifold over a trip to Sydney for the Flight Stakes.
Wherever she runs it will be her first stakes assignment as she’s only had two non-black type starts to date.
She won both of those however including over 1400m at Caulfield on September 20 with a two and a quarter length effort over the Mark Kavanagh-trained Pickin’ Time.
The latest Edward Manifold Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au feature just three single figure hopes despite the large field, Thinking Of You the dominant punters’ pick at $2.70 and jumping from barrier 12 with Luke Nolen booked for the ride.
The two other hopes under $10 are then also undefeated Maastricht ($4.80) drawn better in barrier three and Pittsburgh Flyer ($8) two wider in gate five.
The Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Mastercraftsman filly Maastricht, like Thinking Of You, has had two runs for two wins to date.
Both have been outside of the city however included a 1400m effort on a firm track at Bendigo on September 10 where Dwayne Dunn, who stays on for Saturday, rode her.
Pittsburgh Flyer meanwhile is prepared at Seymour by Lee & Shannon Hope and steps up in class here after a third behind Saturday’s favourite Thinking Of You a fortnight back.
Outside of the top three are then a number of other genuine hopes with claims for an upset Edward Manifold Stakes result including last start Morphettville Guineas winner over the mile in Adelaide Royal Ocean ($11) for Mick Price, Michael Kent’s Little Hottie ($11) coming off a debut win at Kyneton on September 23 and the Robert Smerdon-trained Fontein Ruby ($12).
Also under $10 is then Not A Happy Camper ($17) who is also well liked in the futures markets at Ladbrokes.com.au for the Thousand Guineas and Smerdon’s other runner Crafty ($19) in barrier 11 with Craig Williams to ride.
