2014 Craven Plate Attracts Final Field of Just Seven

The final field and barrier draw has been announced for the Group 3 Craven Plate (2000m), due to run at Royal Randwick Racecourse this Saturday as part of Epsom Handicap Day.

Ten of the nominations declared on Monday have dropped out of the 2014 Craven Plate in favour of other weekend races, leaving a final field of just seven stayers.

Top Sydney trainer Chris Waller dominates the field with four runners – Hawkspur, Moriarty, Danchai, and Vilanova.

Hawkspur headlines the field after drawing barrier one, which means the five-year-old will enjoy the rails run with a yet to be named trainer.

The gelding took home the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at the beginning of September but just missed out on a placing in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) after outside bet Laser Hawk boxed into third.

Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup (2200m) winner and Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) runner-up Moriarty drew wide in barrier six under jockey Blake Shinn, which will do nothing to lift his less-than good 2014 spring racing campaign.

The seven-year-old finished middle of the field in his first two outings of the season before a fast-finishing but still last place run in the Group 2 Hill Stakes (2000m) on September 20.

Group 3 JRA Plate (2000m) runner-up Danchai and Group 3 Grand Prix (2200m) winner Vilanova meanwhile drew middle barriers under Glyn Schofield and Joao Moreira respectively.

The Donna Logan-trained Rising Romance will start from gate two under James McDonald. The four-year-old, who took out a win at the highest level back in April’s Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m), will also run 3kg lighter than the other runners, giving the mare a great advantage at Randwick on Saturday.

Joseph Pride’s Canny Ballad and Kris LeesSlow Pace round out the 2014 Craven Plate final field.

Listed Wyong Cup (2100m) runner-up Canny Ballad will start from gate three under Corey Brown while JRA third Slow Pace drew the widest barrier with Hugh Bowman to ride.
