Thinking Of You Could Miss 2014 Flight Stakes

Undefeated filly Thinking Of You could miss a chance at an early Group 1 win in Sydney’s Flight Stakes 2014 and be kept at home in Melbourne this Saturday for a shot the Edward Manifold Stakes on Turnbull Stakes Day.

Trainer Peter Moody has enjoyed a nice run so far with his progressive daughter of Thorn Park, Thinking Of You winning her opening two career starts.

The first was a three length victory in a Wodonga maiden over 1100m on the first of the month before she went to the big city at Caulfield on September 20 for another impressive win, this time drawing clear to beat Pickin’ Time by two and a half lengths over 1400m.

This weekend then Moody wants to step Thinking Of You up in grade, but whether that’s at Group 2 or 1 level is yet to be confirmed.

If he throws her in the deep end she’d be travelling north to Royal Randwick for the $400,000 Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) that attracted nine nominations including First Seal and Winx who ran one-two in front of Earthquake in the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) a fortnight ago.

Moody however is leaning towards keeping her in Melbourne for a run in the $200,000 Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) run over the same distance and also against her own kind as a lead-up to the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield Saturday week.

Acceptances for all of Saturday’s races close on Wednesday with Moody likely to accept the filly for both fields before making a final decision later in the week.

“I’ll have a look at the make-up of both races but the ideal scenario would be to run in the Manifold here because it keeps the door slightly ajar to run in the Thousand Guineas,” Moody told

“If we go to Sydney and run in the Flight then I wouldn’t travel her up and travel her back and run her in the (Thousand) Guineas, particularly now it’s on the Saturday not the Wednesday and you’ve only got seven days where previously you used to have ten.

“I would have a leaning to the Edward Manifold but if the Flight presents as a race that I thought we could genuinely win then I’ll have to have a close look at it.”

In futures Thousand Guineas betting for the October 11 feature on Caulfield Guineas Day, Thinking Of You is the $5.50 second pick at trailing only Champagne Stakes winner Go Indy Go ($4).

Moody is thrilled with how Thinking Of You came through her latest run and said all of her work over the past couple of weeks has been impressive.

“Her work’s actually picked up so I’m very pleased with the way she’s progressing,” he said.

“I don’t want to get too ahead of myself with her. The thing against her this spring is she’s still in her first racing preparation.

“Having said that, she’s open to good improvement.

“She hasn’t cleaned up in the coat yet, that’s slowly coming through and her best is ahead of her, I think she’ll be even better in the autumn too.”

Moody is also confident his dual Group 2 winner Bring Me The Maid will press onto the 2014 Thousand Guineas despite the Golden Slipper third placegetter getting smashed as the short priced favourite when seventh to Afleet Esprit in the Prelude last Saturday.

Former favourite in the futures Thousand Guineas odds, Bring Me The Maid has now eased out to $6.50 which is equal with four-time winning Bel Esprit filly Afleet Esprit.

“I’ve got a few options with her; she could go to the Thousand Guineas, she could go to the paddock or she freshens and runs in the Coolmore,” Moody said.

“I’ve even got the option to run in the Thousand Guineas and freshen her up three weeks later to run in the Coolmore so I haven’t taken anything off the table.

“I might even look at putting some blinkers on her, she might have just lost some confidence around other horses after the buffeting she got in the Golden Rose.”

The $500,000 Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) runs down the Flemington straight on November 1 as part of Victoria Derby Day and is also the long range target for Golden Rose winner Hallowed Crown.
