A total of 12 gallopers were entered for this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m), down four from last year. As a result, nominations have been extended until 11:00 AM Tuesday, to draw some more potential horses.

Leading the already-announced entries is Group 1 winning River Lad.

The Natalie McCall-trained gelding was moved up in class in June, managing to win his first Group 1 outing – the Stradbroke Handicap (1400m). This came off a Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m) win at Doomben in May.

River Lad hasn’t been seen since his Straddie win in June, but money will likely come in for the seven-year-old when the Gilgai betting market opens at Ladbrokes.com.au shortly, given he is the top-rated entry.

Temple Of Boom is another highlight nomination for Saturday’s race. The eight-year-old has great, consistent form heading into Flemington including triple consecutive second placings.

The Tony Gollan-trained gelding has finished a very close runner-up in his last three outings, which consisted of the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) where he was just a head behind stable mate Spirit Of Boom, the Stradbroke where he was a short neck behind River Lad, and the most recent Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) which he lost to Chautauqua – also a Gilgai nomination.

Peter Moody is set to double his chances of a 2014 Gilgai win after nominating both Flamberge and Il Cavallo.

Flamberge won back-to-back Group 3s earlier in the year, but his recent start found the five-year-old gelding lacking. He finished middle of the pack in the Bobbie Lewis at the same course as the Gilgai on September 13.

Il Cavallo has won three of his last four, and was runner-up in the fourth, but has not run in a class event since September 2013, so it’s unknown how well the four-year-old will track on Saturday.
