2014 Edward Manifold Stakes Nominations Released

A bumper list of early entries have been taken for Saturday’s Edward Manifold Stakes 2014 at Flemington Racecourse, the three-year-old fillies’ feature one of five Group races on the Turnbull Stakes Day program in Melbourne.

Thinking Of You

There are a total of 21 fillies heading towards a possible run in this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) including the undefeated Thinking Of You.

Peter Moody’s Thorn Park filly has won both of her career starts so far, most recently defeating Pickin’ Time by two and a quarter lengths in a fillies’ handicap over 1400m at Caulfield on September 20.

She will then be stepping up in distance to see a mile for the first time, as well as make her black type debut, if she is accepted into the Edward Manifold Stakes field on the weekend.

Also coming off a top three finish behind Thinking Of You in that race is the Lee & Shannon Hope-trained Pittsburgh Flyer who ran third.

Another filly that has won both of her career starts leading into the Edward Manifold is then Maastricht for Team Hawkes, although she’s yet to race in the city with her victories being at Echuca and Bendigo.

A number of other last start winners besides Thinking Of You and Maastricht are also nominated for the Edward Manifold Stakes this year including the Mick Price-trained Royal Ocean.

Fastnet Rock filly Royal Ocean travelled to Adelaide this month and thrived over a mile to win a Listed feature on September 13 which was her second run over 1600m, good form as she sees that distance again this weekend.

The highest rated Edward Manifold Stakes nominee meanwhile is the Kyneton-based Northern Meteor filly Veuvelicious for Brent Stanly.

A Listed winner at Randwick over the mile back in April, Veuvelicious is also Group 1 performed when sixth to Go Indy Go in the Champagne Stakes over the 1600m seven days after her stakes success.

Her latest run however was disappointing when she finished a distant 14th defeating just one of her rivals when over eight and a half lengths off Thinking Of You.

She carried 60kg that day however giving 5.5kg to the winner and so will be much better suited to the set weights conditions of the Edward Manifold Stakes.

Other highly rated hopes include the Robert Smerdon-trained trio Crafty, Fontein Ruby and Lumosty.

A daughter of Fastnet Rock, Lumosty has had three runs for three top three finishes but is yet to break her maiden status.

All of her starts have been in black type company including a third to Earthquake in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude back in February and a second to Afleet Esprit in the Listed Cap D’Antibes Stakes (1100m) at Flemington on September 13.

The form on both of those races is top class too with BD Prelude winner Earthquake going on to win the Group 1 last season and Afleet Esprit taking out the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) at Caulfield this Sunday gone.

See below for the full Edward Manifold Stakes 2014 nominations, the final field for which is due out on Wednesday.
