Lane settled Trust In A Gust just behind the leaders in the early stages of the race and Sistine Demon made sure that the Group 1 event was run at a good tempo when he took up the running from Sweet Idea at the 1100 metre mark.

Dissident looked like the winner with 100 metres left to run and he got his nose in front of Trust In A Gust, but the Keep The Faith entire fought back in the finak stages to claim victory in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.

Lane was thrilled to record a maiden win at the highest level of racing and he paid credit to the fighting spirit of Trust In A Gust.

“He worried me a little bit early, he didn’t muster as good as I hoped and I actually got him over racing trying to get him there,” Lane said.

“To his credit he is a winner and that is what he does.

“I said this morning that if you were riding for anyone today in this race you wouldn’t want it to be any other trainer than Darren Weir.

Darren Weir was the champion trainer in Melbourne for the 2013/2014 racing season, but the win of Trust In A Gust in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes was his first at Group 1 level in Melbourne after taking out his three previous Group 1 wins in Adelaide with Platelet and May’s Dream.

The leading trainer admitted after the race that he has had a slow start to the 2014/2015 racing season, but he was delighted to get a long awaited win at the highest level of racing in his home state.

“It has been a while coming and he is just a great racehorse,” Weir said.

“He actually got headed, fought back and stuck his head out at the right time.

“It is a great thrill, they are a great bunch of people and he is a great little trier.

“It is a great thrill to me to get one finally in Victoria, I haven’t been able to do it, and to do it with this little horse is a great thrill.”

Weir and Lane had a few nervous moments when Ben Melham protested on behalf of the connections of Dissident due to alleged interference in the early stages of the race, but the protest was dismissed by Racing Victoria stewards.
