Trainer John O’Shea and the Godolphin stable celebrated an early double at Rosehill Gardens today taking out their second race in the opening three events with promising filly Abduction winning the Reginald Allen Quality 2014.
The team, and jockey Kerrin McEvoy who this week quit as the stable rider for Godolphin but was kept on by O’Shea for a number of top rides on Stan Fox Stakes Day, took out the first with Gloaming Stakes winner Sweynesse.
“It’s good to get a couple of winners and put myself in the frame for bigger rides later on (during the spring),” McEvoy said after the Reginald Allen Quality victory.
They were then back in the winners’ stall for race three with the nicely-bred Street Cry filly Abduction taking out the $100,000 Listed Bacardi Reginald Allen Quality (1400m).
It was a wide open race for the three-year-old fillies from a betting perspective at Ladbrokes.com.au with all but one in the seven-horse field jumping at single figures.
The one with the longer odds however proved the classiest on the day with Abduction ($10) returning to winning form after a second at Kembla Grange last time out when unsuited to a Heavy (8) track.
At Rosehill today she enjoyed a hard and fast Good (3) track, but the speed certainly wasn’t too quick.
Taking up early running was the Chris Waller-trained last start Warwick Farm winner Dynamic Rock who began well and came through along with Gai Waterhouse’s in-form daughter of Big Brown Muscovado while stable mate Donelle, who went straight to the front last time before dropping back to run fourth at Kembla Grange, was running just off them on the outside.
Abduction and McEvoy meanwhile were back off the moderate pace waiting to strike.
The race turned into a sit-and-sprint affair with Muscoavdo leading on the straight from Donelle with Bjorn Baker’s Real Saga filly Candelara on their outside.
In the dying stages Abduction, who had to switch around the heels of a few for the run, made her move and got through them for narrow victory over Candelara ($8) with Muscoavdo ($9) holding on for third.
Today was Abduction’s fourth career start and it was a nice start to a hopefully productive spring that she could score some early black type and become a dual winner.
“She won nicely for me at Warwick Farm a while ago (on July 16) then she met a heavy track after a little let up last time,” McEvoy said.
“Today John (O’Shea) was happy with her…and she had the drier track.
“She came back and rested nice, picked them up with a nice turn of foot similar to what she showed me at Warwick Farm.”
Plans are now to head south for the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival where McEvoy is confident they’ll find a nice race for her.
“Going forward nice race for her somewhere down in Melbourne,” he said.
O’Shea meanwhile was happy with the result for the pedigree line and said as she matured she would also improve.
“She’s got to learn a few racing manners as she’s still a little big aggressive,” he said.
“See where she fits in but it’s nice to get some black type for this wonderful (Street Cry) family.”
