Talented filly Eloping improved her impressive record with a fast-finishing win in the 2014 Champagne Stakes at Moonee Valley tonight.

Eloping jumped from the gates well, but was challenged for the lead in the early stages of the race before jockey Stephen Baster was able to take control of the race and get away with a couple of cheap sectionals from the 700 metre mark.

David Hayes-trained Tawteen was extremely well-backed in the lead-up to the Champagne Stakes, but she was unable to go with Eloping and she ran away from the rest of the field to record a comfortable win from a fast-finishing Tahni Dancer.

Co-trainers Craig Widdison and Peter Morgan have been consistently amazed by the toughness that Eloping has shown throughout her racing career and they were thrilled to see her take out the Champagne Stakes.

“She is a little star, what you see is what you get and she just lobs every time,” Widdison said.

“Every time you ask her to do something she does it every time.

“She just keeps bouncing back and she is fantastic.

“We will possibly look at the Blue Sapphire.

“We will see how she comes through it, but that might be a nice race.”

Baster has ridden Eloping to four of her five race starts to date, apart from her dominant six lengths win in the Gold Rush (1000m) at Bendigo on March 15, and the veteran hoop was delighted to take out the Champagne Stakes with the three-year-old.

“She is one of the toughest fillies that I have ever ridden,” Baster said.

“She just gives her all and tries so damn hard.

“I ended up getting a couple of easy sectionals there which obviously helped, but she is just a beauty.

“Pete and Craig they work so hard and the results are coming now.

“It is great to be a part of it.”
