2014 Stocks Stakes Betting Tips & Odds

A field of just six mares will race in the $200,000 Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m) at 7:15 PM tonight, after John Sadler’s Reckless Assassin was scratched from the race. Betting tips for the Moonee Valley Racecourse weight for age are set out below.

Continuing to lead the latest Stocks Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is Commanding Jewel at $1.60. While fellow hopefuls Dear Demi ($3.70) and Solicit ($6) are also single figure bets.

All three are entered for next month’s $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m), with their prices set to be slashed in the race’s futures betting market should they perform well tonight.

The Leon & Troy Corstens-trained Commanding Jewel has won five of his nine career starts, including taking out back-to-back Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m). He’ll be partnered with jockey Damien Oliver for his third consecutive run but will have to overcome the widest barrier after drawing gate seven.

Will Commanding Jewel justify her resounding support from the market to take out the 2014 Stocks Stakes?

Or is there an upset on the cards tonight from one of the three longer priced runners, such as the Hobart Group 3 winning Epingle ($21) or Grant Walker’s Rememba Howe ($26) who won the Quest Moonee Valley Fillies & Mares (1600m) her last time out?


#1 Dear Demi ($3.70)

Clarry Conners announced he was exceptionally happy with his five-year-old mare’s form ahead of the Stocks Stakes, and so should punters. Second to Commanding Jewel in the Let’s Elope her last time out, Dear Demi has the ideal start from barrier 2, which punters will remember is the same gate Atlantic Jewel cruised home from in the 2013 Stocks Stakes.


#2 Commanding Jewel ($1.70)

Race favourite for plenty of reasons but has also drawn the widest barrier which will make it harder to come home first. However back-to-back wins in the Let’s Elope plus a third placing in the Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) at the end of August has Commanding Jewel at her best form.


#7 Solicit ($6)

Matthew Ellerton & Simon Zahra’s four-year-old has been a market mover for the Stocks Stakes, with her price being cut from $8 to $6. Solicit may have performed less-than stellar in her last two outings – coming dead-last in the Group 1 Queen Turf (1600m) and third-last in the Let’s Elope – but a start from the middle barrier and a 500g weight advantage over the other runners has seen money coming in for the mare.
