Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The 2014 Moir Stakes has been taken out by Buffering who produced a trademark tough performance to upset Lankan Rupee and score his fourth win at Group 1 level at Moonee Valley tonight.
Buffering took up the running in the early stages of the Moir Stakes, while Lankan Rupee was restrained in second position by jockey Craig Newitt after flying out of the gates.
Lankan Rupee did not respond when initially asked for an extra effort by Newitt and Rebel Dane, Unpretentious and Angelic Light all looked like winning chances at the 200 metres mark.
Lankan Rupee got going at the 150 metre mark, but Buffering was too strong in the final stages of the race and he held on to resign the world’s highest rated sprinter to two defeats from as many starts during the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival to date.
Jockey Damian Browne was full of praise for Buffering and he was clearly delighted that the star Queensland sprinter had been able to record another victory at the highest level of racing in the Moir Stakes.
“He is a wee champion and he tries his heart out,” Browne said.
“I got away with a real cheap furlong and a half and I was able to really put the pressure on at the 600 and 700 and I knew that he would give me plenty.
“This horse everybody has forgotten, he won three Group 1s last year too, but everything seems to forget that.
“Don’t worry about horse of the year, he is our horse of the year anyway.”
Buffering was the star sprinter of the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, taking out the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m), Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic (1200m) and Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m), but he was unable to record a race win during his autumn and winter campaign.
Trainer Robert Heathcote admitted that he was never 100 percent happy with Buffering in Sydney and Brisbane, but he said that the Mossman gelding was clearly back to his best in the Moir Stakes.
“I am lost for words,” Heathcote said.
“I thought he was off his game a little bit during the autumn, but it was a lovely ride from Damian and he rated him a treat.
“He put the pressure on at the 700 and it looked like he was going to go down there, but he is a little bulldog and he just fights.”
