Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Betting on the JRA Cup 2014 at Moonee Valley tonight is starting to heat up with a host of Group 1 hopefuls set to face off, betting tips for the handicap clash detailed below.
A key support race on the Moir Stakes Night program, the $200,000 Group 3 Alternate Railway JRA Cup (2040m) runs as Race 6 at 9:15pm and originally drew a final field of 13 hopes.
That is down to a dozen contenders however following the early scratching of #13 Pyrrolic for Michael Kent.
Favourite then in the latest JRA Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, who are matching first deposits up to $500 for a limited time only bonus bet offer when you use the code SPRINGBONUS, at $3.70 is the in-form seven-year-old The Cleaner.
A cult figure over from the Apple Isle, the Mick Burles-trained Savoire Vivre gelding has won his last two on the trot at Moonee Valley giving him a top record of three wins and two minor placings at the track.
His latest was three weeks ago in the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m), and the step up in distance shouldn’t be a worry here with The Cleaner hoping to make it all the way to the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) back over the track and distance on October 25.
Following The Cleaner in JRA Cup betting are then three other single figure fancies including Dato Tan Chin Nam runner-up Mourinho ($4.20) and the early market mover Signoff ($4.40) coming off a third at Flemington for Darren Weir.
So are the top three in the markets also the ones to lock into your JRA Cup trifecta bets?
Or is there value further down the odds from the likes of Tony McEvoy’s gelding Big Memory ($6) who will appreciate the extra metres second-up or even Moonee Valley track specialist Precedence ($15) from the James & Bart Cummings’ stable?
#1 The Cleaner ($3.70)
Deserving favourite even with the 59kg top weight to overcome. Lead-up form has been outstanding with two wins this time in over the mile at Moonee Valley. Loves the track (5-3-1-1) and while he’s yet to win over the distance, he run second twice from four starts over the 2000m so can step up here three runs in. Carried 60.5kg to win here two back and 59kg under WFA last time out so can handle the kilos. Has Cox Plate dreams so will be needing to run on well here to keep that dream alive and think there’s a strong chance that will happen with Steven Arnold retaining the ride.
#2 Precedence ($15)
Nice price for this veteran Zabeel nine-year-old. He’s won five from nine at Moonee Valley and is a former winner over the track and distance. Winter form in Queensland was good including a Premier’s Cup second over 2200m but first-up was well beaten in a Flemington Listed race over 1400m. That was too short however and the step up in distance will see improvement. Glen Boss rides from barrier three and 58kg is something he can handle.
#8 Big Memory ($6)
Another one that’s going to appreciate the extra meters here after returning with a second behind former Queensland Derby winner Brambles over 1700m at Flemington a fortnight again. Won the Torney Cup over 2500m here in February and in December had winning form over 1900m at Canterbury so all indications are this will suit as he steps up in class.
