Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The feature race for fillies and mares this weekend is the Group 3 Golden Pendant (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse, with betting tips set out below.
There are 12 sprinters in the field for Saturday’s 2014 Golden Pendant, running as Rosehill race 7 at 4:25 PM.
Continuing to lead the latest Golden Pendant odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is the 58kg top weight Catkins at $1.55.
The Chris Waller-trained classy mare has maintained her status as the betting market’s clear favourite having returned to racing in smart form.
The impressive winner of 12 total wins and seven minor placings from just 24 competitive starts had a great 2013 Spring Racing Carnival after winning both the Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 Eliza Park International Stakes (1600m) before finishing second to stable mate Red Tracer in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m).
The Dubawi mare returned in 2014 with similar form, winning both the Group 2 Breeders Classic (1200m) and Group 3 Wiggle Stakes (1400m) as well as finishing third in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m).
Partnered with jockey Hugh Bowman, the five-year-old looks like a clear winner ahead of the Golden Pendant.
The only other single figure hope for the 2014 Golden Pendant is David Vandyke’s Arabian Gold ($6.50) with the majority of runners at outside odds.
Or is an upset on the cards at Rosehill thanks to a long list of longer priced runners such as Group 3 Cuddle Stakes (1600m) winner Neena Rock ($11), market mover My Sabeel ($17), or I’m In The Money ($31) who placed on her last two outings of similar distance – the Listed Mona Lisa Stakes (1350m) and Group 3 Tibbie Stakes (1400m) – and will run from the sought after barrier 3?
#1 Catkins ($1.55)
Catkins is the fixed-odds betting favourite for a reason. The five-year-old has won half her career starts, and has a further seven placings to her name. After charging home to victory in the Group 3 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) on September 13, this mare is ready for success at Rosehill after proving she can win the distance. A start from middle barrier 6 under jockey Bowman should see the pair fly home in first.
#6 My Sabeel ($17)
Money has been coming in for Kevin Moses’ New Zealand talent My Sabeel. The seven-year-old will have to overcome a wide start from barrier 10 but punters are backing her after coming second in the Group 3 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) on the same course. This market mover has shortened from $19 to $17.
#2 Arabian Gold ($6.50)
David Vandyke’s Arabian Gold has only received a sprinkling of wagers to find success in the Golden Pendant but the mare has maintained status as sole occupant of the second single figure bet and offers punters a great value at her current odds. The four-year-old enjoyed a winning hat-trick back in April/May from 2000m+ distance but may not perform as well on the shorter course. Starting from barrier 2 under jockey Blake Shinn will be an advantage.
