There are 16 colts and geldings (plus two emergencies) in the field for Sunday’s Caulfield Guineas Prelude 2014, the 4:00 PM race 6 at Caulfield Racecourse.

The best of the field will then back-up at the same track on October 11 to run in the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on Caulfield Guineas Day.

In recent times both Helmet (2011) and Anacheeva (2010) have taken out the Caulfield Guineas after winning the Prelude, so punters should keep a keen eye on this betting field.

Four of the 18 hopefuls are single figure hopes in the latest Caulfield Guineas Prelude odds at Ladbrokes.com.au with Looks Like The Cat leading the market at $3.50.

The Tony Gollan-trained gelding has placed in all five of his career starts, including a two-year-old Handicap win over 1200m at Eagle Farm back in February.

He managed runner-up his last time out in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m), beaten home by Rich Enuff by just a head.

There are a number of other single figure hopes in the tight Caulfield Guineas betting market, including Danehill Stakes winner Rich Enuff ($5) who will have to earn a win from the widest barrier, Listed Living Legends (1400m) third Zebulon ($7.50), and Leon & Troy CorstensAwesome Rock ($9) who’ll start from barrier 2.

Will one of these single figure betting options take out the Prelude on their way to the Caulfield Guineas?

Or is there an upset coming at the hands of one of the many longer priced hopefuls? There are a few runners at lucrative double digit odds who could easily steal a victory in the 2014 Caulfield Guineas Prelude.

These include New Zealand import Our Vespa ($16) and Godolphin’s leading three-year-old Ghibellines ($19) who has drawn the wide barrier 15.

#11 Zebulon ($7.50)

Zebulon is one of the four single digit hopes, but a $7.50 payout for a colt with the lowest weight plus a start from barrier 3 is a very lucrative potential payout. This New Zealand colt has placed in all four of his last outs, including a Handicap win at Flemington and a third placing in the Listed Living Legends Stakes (1400m). Proven successful over the Prelude distance, he’s sure to at least place.

#3 Our Vespa ($7.50)

Generous odds are being offered for another NZ entry, the Johno Benner-trained Our Vespa. The colt has won five of his seven career starts, and he is entering the race with three wins in a row under his belt including the Listed Karaka Million (1200m) and Challenge Stakes (1200m). He has already proven successful at the highest level, taking out the Group 1 Diamond Stakes (1200m). His only issue will be going that 200m further. Even so, this is a solid betting option that could return great results.

#8 Looks Like The Cat ($7.50)

Race favourite for a number of reasons, Looks Like The Cat has good form after placing in all five of his career starts. He’ll need to bring home the win from the middle barrier; whereas he’s proven a barrier 1 helps him win races. He’s shown he can place despite running from wide gates, so he’s still a solid tip for your trifecta.

There are so many talented horses running in the 2014 Caulfield Guineas, it’s hard to pick just three.
