Scissor Kick Odds-On Betting Favourite for 2014 Stan Fox Stakes

A field of eight three-year-olds will contest the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday after Gai Waterhouse’s Valentia was scratched from the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) in favour of the Stan Fox.

Paul Messara’s in-form colt Scissor Kick leads the small field, which offers greater betting options for punters and an easier chance to place a winning wager.

A winner of three career starts to date, Scissor Kick is odds-on favourite to take out the 2014 Stan Fox at a price of $1.90 ahead of Shooting To Win ($3.10) and Valentia ($4.40) at

Scissor Kick enjoyed a hat-trick this year after taking out the More Than Ready Handicap (1250m), Listed The Rosebud (1200m), and Group 3 Up and Coming Stakes (1300m). His winning streak was broken earlier this month in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) which he lost by just a head to Hallowed Crown.

A run from a better gate (12) would have undoubtedly seen him win the Golden Rose, something his connections will hope to atone for this weekend, as he starts from the much easier barrier 4 with jockey Tye Angland.

Punters believe Scissor Kick can bring home the win in the 2014 Stan Fox, offering the favourite resounding support, but will one of the colt’s rivals cause an upset?

  • #4 Shooting To Win ($3.10) – both Scissor Kick and Shooting To Win are using this race as a lead-in to the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 11. The Pete & Paul Snowden-trained colt has drawn barrier 3 this weekend with Tim Clark to ride. Having already won two races, Shooting To Win finished just 1½ lengths off Scissor Kick in the Golden Rose and is the safest bet to beat Paul Messara’s colt home at Rosehill.
  • #3 Valentia ($4.40) – Gai Waterhouse scratched crack Fastnet Rock colt Valentia from the Gloaming Stakes in favour of the shorter distanced Stan Fox. The Group 2 Skyline Stakes (1200m) winner will ride from barrier 7 under Tommy Berry and is the third favourite in the latest fixed-odds market.

Outside of the top three are a couple of runners at lucrative odds with a high chance at causing an upset in the 2014 Stan Fox Stakes.

Golden Slipper and Golden Rose ninth placer Modoc may be paying $34 but will enjoy the rails run from barrier one under Jeff Lloyd.
