Seven Horses in 2014 Stocks Stakes Final Field

The final field and barrier draw have been announced for the Group 2 Stocks Stakes (1600m), the second race scheduled to run at Moonee Valley Racecourse this Friday – September 26, 2014.

Seven horses accepted for the 2014 Stocks Stakes, including headline nominee Commanding Jewel.

11 mares made up the early nominations for this year’s $200,000 weight-for-age clash on Monday, yet even with an extension until Tuesday four mares have been removed – Bippo No Bungus, Danish Whiskey, Text’n Hurley, and Tully Costa – leaving a final field of seven.

Dear Demi has drawn barrier 2, the same Atlantic Jewel cruised home from last year, and will be partnered with jockey Jim Cassidy in the race. The pair rode well in the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) at Flemington Racecourse earlier this month but were beaten at the line a mere short neck by Commanding Jewel.

Commanding Jewel, who won back-to-back Let’s Elope Stakes, will have her work cut out for her at Moonee Valley this Friday after drawing the widest gate. It’ll be a test for the five-year-old, who looks set to test herself in Group 1 action next month for the first time since 2012. Leon & Troy Corstens have nominated the mare for both the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) and Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) later this spring.

Commanding Jewel currently pays $15 in the futures Cox Plate odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, down from $17 after nominations were made.

Also included in the 2014 Stocks Stakes final field is Rememba Howe from New Zealand. The Grant Walker-trained mare is set to get an excellent start after drawing barrier 1.

Reckless Assassin and Solicit are also amongst the 2014 Stocks Stakes final field and barrier draw acceptances.
