2014 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes Field & Barriers – Dissident Draws 5

Peter Moody’s star four-year-old Dissident will face 13 rivals in Sunday’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes 2014 field and has come up trumps with barrier five.

A 14 horse field was released this morning for this weekend’s $400,000 Group 1 Bendigo Bank East Malvern Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield Racecourse, the headline acceptor being Moody’s triple Group 1 winner Dissident.

The son of Sebring won the Randwick Guineas last season and is undefeated this time in thanks to back-to-back elite level victories in the Memsie Stakes and Makybe Diva Stakes.

On Sunday he’ll look to make it a Group 1 hat trick from barrier five which has produced three Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes winners in the past 31 years.

He is sure to start favourite then in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au looking to become the fourth favourite in the past 11 years to salute for the punters.

He is also out to become the first horse to take out the Memsie Stakes – Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes double since Regal Roller in 2004.

Moody will be dually represented in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes field this year too having also accepted for his in-form mare A Time For Julia.

She too was a big winner in this morning’s barrier draw coming up with the inside alley, Glen Boss to ride the lightly weighted mare (52kg) from gate one.

Her better fancied stable mate Dissident meanwhile carries the 58kg top weight with Ben Melham staying on after riding the champ to victory in his two Group 1 wins this season.

Following Dissident in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes field and weights with 55.5kg is then Colin Scott’s Testa Rossa seven-year-old Speediness.

The veteran however didn’t fare as well with a wide barrier 12 draw to overcome.

Runner-up in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes in Sydney back in March, Speediness was last seen running a credible first-up fourth to Chautauqua in the Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Handicap (1200m) a fortnight ago.

There he carried a hefty 59.5kg from a similarly wide barrier 11 draw with Craig Williams aboard, the galloper to appreciate a four kilo drop in the weights with Williams retaining the ride.

The only other two Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes acceptors weighted above the 52kg minimum are then Gai Waterhouse’s  smart Sydney mare Sweet Idea (53.5kg) the Tony Gollan-trained Brisbane visitor Alma’s Fury (53kg) jumping from barrier eight and 13 respectively.

First-up winner of the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) over the boys at Randwick, Snitzel four-year-old Sweet Idea was runner-up behind Dissident beaten 2.25 lengths on August 30 in the Memsie Stakes.

She will be ridden by Tommy Berry this weekend who replaces Craig Newitt.

Newitt instead has the ride on Alma’s Fury, the seven-year-old Refuse To Bend gelding second-up after an unplaced Bobbie Lewis run a fortnight ago.

The other most notable chance then looks to be the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Cluster who now has work to do from the outside barrier.

Nominated for the $500,000 Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday week and paying $13 to win through Ladbrokes.com.au, Fastnet Rock four-year-old Cluster was last seen winning the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1400m) on September 13.

Also in the mix are the likes of the Chris Waller-trained Theo Marks Stakes runner-up Bull Point (barrier 10) and last start Moonee Valley winner Atlante (barrier four) for Team Hawkes.

The most notable non-acceptor was then Dan Excel, the Cox Plate bound Hong Kong raider struck down with a virus this week.

Trainer John Moore discovered the last start Singapore Cup winner was suffering from a high temperature on Tuesday and as such his Cox Plate campaign has been thrown into disarray.
