2014 Caulfield Classic First Acceptances Draws 103 Entries

There was a great response to the inaugural Group 3 Caulfield Classic (2000m) yesterday as first declarations were taken by Racing Victoria.

103 first acceptors declared for the October 18 race. This is a fantastic result for a Group 3 feature still new on the scene, with the lucrative $750,000 prize pool undoubtedly drawing in the crowd.

The set weights race open to three-year-olds will be held on Caulfield Cup Day for the first time this year, one week after the top three-year-olds in the country run in either the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) or $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m).

The Caulfield Classic also features a $250,000 bonus up for grabs, available to any horse that can win either the Thousand or Caulfield Guineas before backing it up with a Classic victory the following weekend. Unsurprisingly, almost all of the following acceptances are combined from the two Guineas’ – which had their second acceptances taken yesterday.

Of the 103 horses officially accepted yesterday, there were some serious contenders including Almalad, Chivalry, and Go Indy Go.

Gai Waterhouse’s Almalad took out the Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m) back in June, but just missed out on a top-three place in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) on September 14.

Chivalry is $4.40 early favourite with Ladbrokes.com.au to win the Caulfield Guineas, and could easily back it up with a win in the Classic to take home the bonus $250k. The Mark Kavanagh-trained colt won the Group 3 McNeil Stakes (1200m) at the end of August, before finishing runner-up at Flemington earlier this month in the Listed Living Legends Stakes (1400m), where he was beat by a nose.

The Leon Macdonald & Andrew Glyas-trained Go Indy Go enjoyed a one length victory over the boys in April’s Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m). However, the daughter of Bernardini didn’t do as well in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) earlier this month, finishing dead-last behind fellow Classic contender Rich Enuff.

Some of the other notable Caulfield Classic first acceptors include Paul Berry’s Scratch Me Lucky, Listed winning Merion, and Group 3 winning Sweynesse.

The 2014 Caulfield Classic final field will be released on October 15, three days out from the race.
