Favourites Missing from 2014 Victoria Derby Nominations

The two pre-post favourites in Victoria Derby 2014 betting are missing from the list of official nominations taken by Racing Victoria for the three-year-olds’ classic today.

Running as the feature race at Flemington Racecourse on the opening day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival on Saturday November 1, this year’s $1.5 million Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m) attracted 84 nominees, four less than last year.

The two big name omissions, and the two who were battling for favouritism in the early Victoria Derby odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, are Tony Gollan’s Looks Like The Cat and Zebulon.

Last seen running a good second behind Rich Enuff in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on September 13, Husson gelding Looks Like The Cat is still in the mix for the $1 million Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) however as one of 55 first acceptors taken for the October 11 feature.

Zebulon meanwhile was third last time out in a black type over 1400m at Flemington and is also still in the mix for the Caulfield Guineas as well as the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 25.

Other notable Victoria Derby non-entries who were well liked in the pre-nomination markets include 2014 Caulfield Guineas favourite Chivalry for Mark Kavanagh, 2014 Darley Classic nominated Ghibellines and the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Proactive.

The sure to be favourite in Victoria Derby futures betting meanwhile is now Sweynesse.

John O’Shea’s undefeated Lonhro colt has won all three of his career starts to date most recently at Newcastle on September 17 in the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1600m).

He races again this Saturday in Sydney in a Caulfield Guineas, Cox Plate, Victoria Derby preparatory run in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m) at Rosehill Gardens.

Also in the mix for O’Shea are four other youngsters including Group 1 Champagne Stakes third placed Kumaon looking to atone for a Golden Rose 10th last time out.

The other top fancies in the mix include Michael Moroney’s dual stakes winning O’Reilly gelding Merion, the Gerald Ryan-trained Group 3 winner Bachman who failed when 12th in the Golden Rose and New Zealand-trained Atmosphere whose only two career starts have been at Sale in Victoria.

Other notable Victoria Derby nominations include Robert Hickmott’s nicely-bred Zabeel colt Divan, Robert Smerdon‘s Bernign Desire, Champagne Stakes runner-up to Go Indy Go from April Zululand, Leon & Troy CorstensAwesome Rock and Triple Gold for Peter Moody.

See below for the complete AAMI Victoria Derby 2014 nominations to be cut at first acceptance stage on Tuesday October 21.

In the meantime gear up for a supercharged spring on the punt online now at Ladbrokes.com.au where, for a limited time only, first time depositing players will be rewarded with a bonus $500 bet when quoting the code SPRINGBONUS!
