2014 Caulfield Guineas Second Acceptances Leaves 55

Second acceptances for the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas(1600m) were taken today, along with a host of other Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival races, and a total of 55 horses remain in contention for the stallion-making race.

The first acceptance stage for the $1 million 2014 Caulfield Guineas attracted 108 three-year-olds, which was reduced today by 53 – almost half. However, the majority of top contenders for the October 11 race, including Chivalry, remain.

This number is on par with the 2013 Caulfield Guineas second acceptances, which had a total of 46 horses. That means this year’s number of entries is up by seven.

For the first time, this year’s Caulfield Guineas Day will feature two Group 1 races as the filly-only Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) will be run on the same day.

The number of New Zealand runners from first declarations is down from fourteen to eight. The horses from across the sea still in contention include Our Vespa, Merion, Zebulon, and Proactive.

The Chris Waller-trained Winx remains dually accepted for both the Caulfield and Thousand Guineas, while his other three-year-old filly Amicus has solely declared for the Thousand.

The only other dual-acceptor, Peggy Jean, is surprisingly absent from both races. The filly, who finished last in the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) on Saturday, is instead opting to travel to Sydney for the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on the same day for more distance.

Other notable omissions include Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) 5th place Nostradamus and Group 2 Champagne Classic (1500m) winner Brazen Beau, who both look likely to line-up at the Listed Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200) on the 15th instead.

Chivalry remains the favourite with Ladbrokes.com.au, set to pay $4.40, after coming second in the Listed Living Legends Stakes (1400m) on September 13. The Street Cry colt looked to be the winner in the last 300m but just couldn’t get past Merion in the drive to line, losing out by just 0.1 lengths.

Other top contenders have seen their odds shorten following the second declarations including $7 Rich Enuff and Zebulon (from $8), $9 Scissor Kick and Merion(from $10), and $17 Ghibellines (from $21).
