A star studded list of Group 1 winning sprinters has been released for the A.J. Moir Stakes 2014 at Moonee Valley on Friday night where Lankan Rupee will be out to atone for a surprise loss first-up.
Nominations for the $450,000 Group 1 City Jeep A.J. Moir Stakes (1200m) have been extended until 10:00am on Tuesday with just 10 runners currently entered for the classic.
There is talent galore in those 10 however including the world’s highest rated sprinter Lankan Rupee for Mick Price.
The triple Group 1 winning son of Redoute’s Choice is looking to atone for a first-up defeat when going down as the $1.22 hottie by a nose in the Group 2 Mitty’s McEwen Stakes (1000m).
Fitter for that run the five-year-old worked at Moonee Valley this morning and flew home ahead of stable mate Lion of Belfort impressing Price and jockey Craig Newitt who stays on for Friday night.
The Robbie Griffiths-trained roughie that beat home Lankan Rupee in the McEwen, Holy Roman mare Angelic Light is after another upset this weekend.
She’s nominated for the Moir Stakes too with Griffiths keen to give her another shot at the champ.
Griffiths has also nominated for his Written Tycoon gelding It Is Written who ran fourth in the McEwen Stakes first-up.
Outside of Lankan Rupee however, the horse to beat looks to be another triple Group 1 winner in the Robert Heathcote-trained Buffering.
Buffering won the Moir Stakes two years ago when the sprint held only Group 2 status before a distant fourth to Samaready 12 months ago.
From there he finally broke his Group 1 maiden at his 18th attempt at elite level in the Manikato Stakes back at Moonee Valley, adding the VRC Sprint Classic and Winterbottom to his tally to boot.
The son of Mossman though hasn’t raced since a third behind the ‘Boom Brothers’ in the Doomben 10,000 on May 24, Heathcote hoping he can go one better first-up in this year’s Moir Stakes.
Other Group 1 winners in the mix include Rebel Dane and Tiger Tees.
Gary Portelli’s California Dane stallion Rebel Dane is second-up on Friday at a track he’s had just the one unplaced run at, the five-year-old having caught the eye when under half a length away third to Sweet Idea in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on August 9.
Tiger Tees for Joe Pride meanwhile won back-to-back Group races to kick off his seven-year-old season, the former The Galaxy winner then running a credible second behind Lucia Valentina on September 6 in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m).
Gai Waterhouse’s Missile Stakes winning mare Sweet Idea is also set to back up in the Moir Stakes in her first look at Moonee Valley, the four-year-old daughter of Snitzel last seen running second to Dissident in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) on August 30.
The other most notable Moir Stakes hope is then the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Commands mare Gregers who won the Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) two back before a sixth in the Group 2 Let’s Elope (1400m) at Flemington a fortnight ago.
