Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Leon & Troy Corstens’ last start Let’s Elope Stakes winner Commanding Jewel is the headline nominee for the Stocks Stakes 2014 at Moonee Valley’s Moir Stakes Night meeting this Friday.
The Commands five-year-old is one of 11 mares making up the early entries for this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Top Cut Stocks Stakes (1600m).
Nominations for the weight-for-age clash, won last year by Atlantic Jewel, have been extended however until 10am on Tuesday morning.
Winner of the 2012 Thousand Guineas, injury and setbacks saw Commanding Jewel sidelined for nearly a year.
She was back on September 13 at Flemington however to successfully defend her Group 1 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) title having won the race last year over Catkins.
That was her second run since returning too and an improved effort on her third to Gregers in the Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) on August 30.
She goes into the Stocks Stakes over a run at Caulfield on Sunday in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) with connections keen to keep Damien Oliver aboard and give her a look at the track before the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) on October 25.
Commanding Jewel currently pays $17 in the futures Cox Plate odds at Ladbrokes.com.au.
Also coming via a run in the Let’s Elope Stakes behind Commanding Jewel are the likes of runner-up Dear Demi and Group 1 Storm Queen Stakes runner-up to Lucia Valentina in the autumn Solicit (7th).
The Clarry Conners-trained Dehere mare Dear Demi is a super consistent force with plenty of Group 1 experience.
She ran fifth in the Cockram two back before finishing only a long neck away in the Let’s Elope in a run Conners is hoping she can go one better than when stepping up over 1600m which she’s got a great record over (6-2-2-1).
Also coming off good form this time in are the likes of Perth mare Bippo No Bungus and the John Sadler-trained Reckless Assassin who won back-to-back Flemington races earlier this year.
Other notable hopes then include Launceston Cup – Hobart Cup double winner from February Epingle – the Pins seven-year-old last seen running fifth to current 2014 Melbourne Cup favourite The Offer in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) back in April, last start winner over the track and distance Rememba Howe and Group 2 Sunline Stakes winner here over Bippo No Bungus in March Text’n Hurley.
See below for the current Top Cut Stocks Stakes 2014 nominations with the field and barriers set for release on Wednesday.
