Panzer Division One to Beat in George Main Stakes

Partnering the classy three-year-old to victory in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) last time out on September 6th, in-form jockey Tye Angland believes Panzer Division is more than capable of winning this afternoon’s Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) at Randwick, despite electing to take the ride of veteran rival Laser Hawk.

Contesting just three races for two wins and a second place in his short career so far, trainer Paul Messara elected to keep Panzer Division out of last weekend’s Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) in order to chase the George Main crown with a race-low 50.5kgs handicap; 6kgs lighter than his closest rivals.

Steering the Redoute’s Choice colt to a near two length victory last time out, Angland told AAP he is confident Panzer Division will experience success at the highest level of Australian racing at some point in his career, and sees no reason why that won’t happen in the 2014 George Main Stakes.

“I’m excited about the horse. Hopefully if he does win or runs a good race I can get back on him,” Angland said.

“I think he is a Group One horse in the making. If it’s not this season, it’s next season.

“The best of him is still another prep away but it would not surprise me if he came out and won the race.”

Renowned hoop Brenton Avdulla has been confirmed to take the ride on Panzer Division in the 2014 George Main Stakes, and revealed the task of getting down in weight in a short period of time was made easier by his confidence in the three-year-old’s chances.

“In any other year I would have had my doubts about a horse like him winning a George Main,” Avdulla said.

“But it looks a very open race and he appears ready to go given the form around his stablemate Scissor Kick.

“We’ll ride him aggressively I’m tipping and he’s going to be somewhere in the first couple.”

Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best odds on this afternoon’s George Main Stakes, for which Panzer Division has been backed into favouritism; now available at a quote of $5 for success, or $1.90 to run a place.
