Girl Guide Takes Out Sprint Series Heat Two In Thrilling Finish

Promising filly Girl Guide gave the Lindsay Park Team a fourth victory at Caulfield this afternoon with a tight win in the 2014 Sprint Series Heat Two.

Girl Guide was caught wide in the early stages of the race, but was able to finish strongly in the last 100 metres to score a narrow win over A Time For Julia, Shamal Wind and Politeness in the race that was formerly known as the How Now Stakes.

Jockey Craig Williams said that his plan was always to followed runner-up A Time For Julia into the race and he said after the race that he was thrilled with the toughness shown by the Churchill Downs mare in the final stages of the race.

“She actually beat the same horse that her sister Gregers beat to win the Cockram,” Williams said.

“They didn’t go a gallop at all and we just thought that we would be simple and follow A Time For Julia because she would give us a good lead.

“They went slow and really sprinted up in the last 500 metres.

“I love the way that she really stuck her head out.

“I did need her to be tough late and she was.”

Girl Guide was having just her second start at Group level in the How Now Stakes, after finishing third in the Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville on May 10, and co-trainer David Hayes was delighted to score a black type win with the half-sister to Gregers.

Gregers won the opening race of the Sprint Series earlier in the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival and Hayes said that there was every chance that the pair could clash in the Spring Series Final at Caulfield on October 11.

“That was very important for that filly,” Hayes said.

“She is Gregers’ sister, she picked up black type by beating tough field and she did it the right way.

“They could easily meet in the final and I think that A Time For Julia would be pleased not to see them.

“We raced three wide without cover, were tackled all the way in the straight and she stuck her neck out.

“It was a very good, tough win.”

The win was the Hayes and Dabernig’s fourth of the day at Caulfield, after previously winning with Firehouse Rock, Fast ‘N’ Rocking and Star Fashion, and Hayes admitted that he could not remember the last time that he had trained four winners in a day.

“I think I remember the last time that I had five, but not four,” Hayes said.

“I have had a few trebles in between, but it has certainly been a really good day and with an ounce of luck it could have been a freak day.”
