Run over 1800m under weight-for-age conditions, the $400,000 Group 1 Hyland Race Colours Underwood Stakes (1800m) has proven a gun guide for the Cox Plate with two of the past four winners, Ocean Park (2012) and So You Think (2010), going on to win the Moonee Valley feature.

This weekend a host of 2014 Cox Plate hopes face off in the Underwood Stakes again, punters keen to get in on the betting action of either race best advised to head to Ladbrokes.com.au where a $500 spring bonus bet is waiting when you sign-up and use the code SPRINGBONUS!

Underwood Stakes betting for Saturday is led by four-time Group 1 winning mare Silent Achiever ($3.20).

She may have a hoodoo to overcome as a mare, the last to win being Tristarc (1985), but as a New Zealand-trained visitor recent history works in her favour with the past three Underwood Stakes winners all being Kiwi gallopers.

Also high up the Underwood Stakes odds are then the likes of Foreteller ($4.80) for Chris Waller who comes off a third in the Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes and Gai Waterhouse’s Melbourne Cup favourite The Offer ($6).

So can Silent Achiever break the mares’ hoodoo and salute for the punters in the Underwood Stakes, becoming the first favourite to win since So You Think (2010)?

Or is there an upset Underwood Stakes result on the cards from a longer priced hope such as last start winner over 1700m at the track Stipulate ($6) or even last year’s Cox Plate runner-up Happy Trails ($13) who ran fourth to It’s A Dundeel last year?

#2 Foreteller ($4.80)

Super consistent galloper always runs well in top class company. Is third-up from a spell and his two lead-up runs have been very strong. Looked close to winning when third in the Dato and think the improvement going up to 1800m at Caulfield after the Moonee Valley mile will suit. Is a previous winner at the track and distance and the trip will suit.

#10 Silent Achiever ($3.20)

Don’t think there will be much in the finish and the favourite must be respected. Lots of pros and cons stats-wise. She’s looking to become the fourth straight New Zealand-trained Underwood Stakes winner but the first mare since 1985 and the only female to win over the current 1800m. Favourites have won just three of the past 11 editions and none since So You Think (2010) but her lead-up form is identical to that of It’s A Dundeel who also ran fourth in the Memsie Stakes before taking out the Underwood and she’s a dual Group 1 winner down under so knows how to handle this class.

#4 Happy Trails ($13)

Form line on Paul Beshara’s 2013 Cox Plate runner-up is nearly identical to last year with a first-up fifth in Adelaide followed by a run in the Memsie (7th last year, 8th this year). Ran fourth then in the Underwood last year and if he’s travelling the same, which by all reports he is, then can expect a close finish here again.
