George Main Stakes 2014 Betting Tips

On Saturday a 10-horse field of weight-for-age hopefuls will face off at Sydney’s Royal Randwick Racecourse in the 2014 George Main Stakes– betting tips and exotic selections for which are detailed below.

Paul Messara’s lightly-raced three-year-old Panzer Division is heading the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au for this year’s $350,000 Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) paying $4.60 to beat home a field of older rivals.

Getting in well in the weights under the WFA conditions, the Redoute’s Choice colt has just his third career start here having won two of his previous runs.

Most recently he took out the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) on a Heavy (9) track at Randwick on September 6, an effort he’s out to repeat against older rivals over more distance on a firmer track this weekend.

Also high up the George Main Stakes odds are the likes of the Chris Waller-trained duo of Royal Descent ($5), who has run second in all three of her runs at this track and distance, and Sacred Falls ($5.50) who won the Doncaster Mile twice over the 1600m at Randwick.

So can Panzer Division reclaim a win for the three-year-olds, none having won since they dominated with nine wins from 1984 to 2001?

Or is there an upset George Main Stakes result on the card from the likes of Waller’s last start Chelmsford Stakes winner Hawkspur ($7.50) or fellow last start winner Teronado ($15) up in class after a win over the mile at Doomben a fortnight ago?

1st

#6 Royal Descent ($5)

Waller’s Redoute’s Choice mare hasn’t won a race since a 10 length romp in the mud at Randwick in the 2013 Australian Oaks but think it is her time to shine again finally here. Has run second in her four Randwick starts, including three over the 1600m here like the Doncaster last season. Two runs this time in have been tops when second in the Warwick Stakes and Chelmsford where a nose separated her and stable mate Hawkspur. Lost that by the bob of the head but think she’ll be improved and ready to strike from the nice barrier (two).

2nd

#1 Sacred Falls ($5.50)

Dual Doncaster Mile winner here, including a half length win over Sacred Falls this autumn gone. Comes via the same two races as Sacred Falls this time in running fourth each time in solid efforts. Needs to be better than that to win this however but third-up should be firing and ready to hit peak. Proven at the track and distance and WFA so definitely in it to win it.

3rd

#7 Lucia Valentina ($5.50)

Group 1 winning mare at Rosehill over 2000m in April and ran third in the ATC Oaks here to Rising Romance. Caught the eye first up in the Tramway defeating Tiger Tees well for her second Heavy track victory in as many attempts. Also goes well on Dead ground here but this is first attempt at weight-for-age. Mile should suit though so expect her to be right in the finish off her brilliant resuming win.
