Terravista has opened clear favourite to win closing race in Sydney on Saturday but will the punters’ pick also be the horse Races.com.au has selected to be this year’s The Shorts 2014 winner at Royal Randwick?
The field for this weekend’s $200,000 Group 2 Bowermans Office Furniture Shorts (1100m) is down to 10 after the early withdrawal of #10 Rifleman and #11 Angels Beach.
Leading The Shorts odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, home of the limited-time-only $500 bonus bet for punters that quote the code SPRINGBONUS, is the Joe Pride-trained Terravista at a firming $2.30.
A winner of seven of his 10 starts the five-year-old Captain Rio gelding returned to racing on August 23 at the track and won the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m).
He’s undefeated then at Randwick with a hat trick of wins and has also won his only 1100m start leading into Saturday’s short sprint.
Following in The Shorts betting markets are then three other single figure hopes with the defending champion Sessions ($4.60), Anthony Cummings’ Group 2 winner and Group 1 performer Villa Verde ($7), and Whittington ($9) having his first start for Chris Waller.
So will this year’s The Shorts winner come from one of those under $10 in the markets?
Or is there value to be found further down from the likes of the Noel Mayfield-Smith-trained Famous Seamus ($15) or John O’Shea’s Safeguard (415) who are both first-up here?
#2 Sessions ($4.60)
John O’Shea-trained Lonhro stallion won this race second-up last year on the back of a second in the Concorde Stakes when prepared by Peter Snowden. Hasn’t won a race since but think he can break the drought here racing fresh which is when he performs his best with a good first-up record (5-3-1-0). Has had two good trials since failing (13th) in The Goodwood winning his most recent hit-out over 807m at Warwick Farm last Friday. Ready to resume and defend his title from barrier six with James McDonald riding.
#3 Terravista ($2.30)
Favourite and market mover in from $2.70. Pride’s galloper has an ultra consistent record, is undefeated from three at the track and the distance is good. Won over 1200m first-up in the Group 3 Show County Quality and also goes well second up with two wins from three starts previously. Has won on Good, Dead and Heavy tracks so is versatile. If handles the drop back in distance and it’s not too short for this galloper who has won up to 1400m then could prove the horse to be on.
#5 Wouldnt It Be Nice ($26)
Juicy price for Paul Perry’s Newcastle-trained Choisir four-year-old who is on the up and up. Improving each time out and won in an upset over a class field here a fortnight ago in the Concorde over 1000m in Group 3 company. Tough assignment again here and think the wet track played in his favour there but still not ruling out completely especially at these odds.
