A field of potential 2014 Caulfield Cup horses will fight it out for the ballot exemption for next month’s classic in Saturday’s $150,000 Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m), betting tips on the Underwood Stakes Day showdown detailed below.
There are 12 stayers in the field for Saturday’s Naturalism Stakes 2014, the handicap clash running as Caulfield Race 6 at 3:25pm.
Leading the latest Naturalism Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is the 58kg top weight Spillway at $2.90.
Also well liked in the futures Caulfield Cup betting markets for October 18 back at the track, David Hayes & Tom Dabernig’s Rail Link stallion is one of seven imports in the race that kicked off their careers in Europe.
The five-year-old has had two runs this time in since a Group 3 JRA Plate (2000m) win in Sydney back in April.
First-up at Caulfield he ran second to Star Rolling in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) and then stepped up to Group 1 company in the Makybe Diva Stakes last time out for a brave fourth beaten only 1.6 lengths by Dissident.
Saturday he carries the heavy impost but he’s been impressive down under so far and should improve getting out over the 2000m here ahead of the $3.5 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m).
It’s a tight Naturalism Stakes betting market after the top fancy with three other single figure hopes.
They are Entirely Platinum ($5.50) for Team Hawkes out to improve on a dead last in the Chelmsford in Sydney last start, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Bonfire ($6) and Group 3 winner Our Voodoo Prince ($6.50) for Chris Waller.
So will one of the dominant quartet in the Naturalism Stakes odds salute for the race fans?
Or is there an upset on the cards form a longer priced hope such as early market mover Gris Caro ($10) or Bernardini mare Zanbagh ($14)?
#5 Bonfire ($6)
Waterhouse-trained import has had two runs down under for two seconds at Rosehill over 1800m. Should appreciate the 2000m having won up to 2100m back in Europe and how they handle Randwick will be key. Latest start on August 30 was behind stable mate and fellow import Greatwood in the Listed Premier’s Cup run in the mud. Will be better on top of the ground here and will be up there early on the pace. If he holds position should handle the 56kg, Craig Williams riding, dropping back from 58kg last time out.
#11 Gris Caro ($10)
Money is coming for Jake Stephen’s six-year-old and think the money trail might just be worth following. Hasn’t won in over 12 months when taking out the Balaklava Cup over a mile last September, but should be fitter at his third run back. Last start was 2.5 lengths off The Cleaner in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes and the step up to 1800m is key here as he’s had four starts over the distance and finished out of the money just once (8-4-3-0).
#1 Spillway ($2.90)
Race favourite for a number of reasons and form has been good, just query the 58kg even if it’s less than what he had under WFA in the Makybe Diva over the mile last Saturday. On the short turnaround so might need a little longer between runs but distance is ideal. Hasn’t won over less than 2000m or over 2200m so this is his pet distance, and the punters won’t shy away even on the seven day back-up.
