Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The feature race for mares on the Underwood Stakes card in Melbourne this weekend is the How Now Stakes 2014, betting tips for the female galloper’s clash found right here.
Originally 13 mares made up the field for Saturday’s $150,000 Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m), registered as the Sportingbet Sprint Series Heat 2 Stakes.
The early withdrawal of the Peter Moody-trained Brilliant Bisc however has left a dozen in the mix fighting it out for first prize in the penultimate race on Caulfield’s nine event program.
Four of the 12 remaining hopefuls are under double figures in the latest How Now Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au with markets led by Samaready ($3.80).
A multiple Group 1 winner Mick Price’s now five-year-old daughter of More Than Ready is first-up here racing for the first time since a disappointing ninth behind Spirit Of Boom when beating home just one other runner in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m).
She hasn’t won a race since the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley 12 months ago but on her best form would be the one to beat here.
First-up she runs well having won two of her four starts off a spell before and with Damien Oliver on her back form barrier five the bookies are taking no chances.
Following Samaready in the How Now Stakes betting markets are then the likes of Robert Smerdon’s Group 1 performed Shamal Wind ($4.80), Moody’s market mover A Time For Julia ($5.50) coming off a second in the Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) at the track from last month and Girl Guide ($5.50) up in class here after a win by three lengths against easier company at Moonee Valley a month back.
So will one of the single figure fancies get the job done in the How Now this year?
Or is there an upset on the cards from a longer priced hope such as the resuming Group 3 winner Politeness ($14) or even the Darren Weir-trained May’s Dream ($31) who won the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks over 2000m last time out and so will be better getting up over more distance?
#4 A Time For Julia ($5.50)
Money coming for Moody’s hope who is in from $6.50 following a nice return at the track three weeks back. She was second to Gregers in the Cockram on August 30 and has a great record here at Caulfield (6-2-3-0). Also a winner at the track and distance and has finished in the money in all three of her second-up starts (3-0-2-1) with this her attempt at a first win two back off a break. Group 1 performed, full of class and will be right up there on the speed in the finish looking to hold off the late comers.
#4 Shamal Wind ($4.80)
Get back mare who jockey Nicholas Hall will let settle off the pace. The daughter of Dubawi won over the 1000m at Flemington back in April and has a brilliant finishing burst she’ll be looking to pull out here after a first-up fourth, also over 1000m, at Moonee Valley four weeks ago. Extra metres will suit and she’s on the improve.
#3 Spirits Dance ($21)
Generous odds being offered for this mare who is second-up off a spell. Also representing Moody this Statue Of Liberty four-year-old won four on the trot earlier in the year including back-to-back Group races here at Caulfield, most recently the Group 2 Angus Armanaso stakes (1400m). First-up run at Moonee Valley produced a seventh to Atlante but she’ll be fitter for that run and is a winner at this track and distance. Moonee Valley circuit wasn’t to her liking but with three wins from four starts at Caulfield expect a challenge here at a nice price.
