Winks Confident in Major Success for Our Voodoo Prince

Confirmed to partner the classy import in this weekend’s Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield, jockey James Winks has revealed his is confident Our Voodoo Prince is a legitimate chance of taking out the featured Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 18th.

Contesting an impressive total of six wins and seven minor places from just 22 competitive starts so far, Our Voodoo Prince began his racing career under the guidance of leading European trainer Ed Dunlop before transferring the care of current trainer Chris Waller at the conclusion of 2013.

Partnering the six-year-old in each of his three maiden races upon arriving in Australia over autumn, Winks said he believes the comfortable one length win in the Group 3 Easter Cup (2000m) at Caulfield on April 19th was a particularly good Cup indicator.

Confident of a polished performance in the Naturalism Stakes, Winks identified fellow British import Spillway as the biggest hurdle in a return to the winner’s circle this weekend.

“He’s going to run a hell of a race in the Naturalism. He might just be one more (run) away condition-wise but he’s a good horse and good horses run well,” Winks told AAP.

“Probably the only one to beat is Spillway. Everyone is there doing their best to get into the Caulfield Cup so it’d be a big relief if he can win it.

“He showed why he could win a Caulfield Cup, I felt, in the autumn when he won the Easter Cup.

“This time in he’s taken a bit longer to come to hand but he’s a very good horse and if he gets into the Caulfield Cup, which I dare say he will, he’ll give it one hell of a shake.”

Charging home to win the Surdex Steel BM84 (1600m) in what was his racing Australian debut on March 22nd, Our Voodoo Prince beat a talented field to the line in the Community Raceday Handicap (200m) by close to two lengths on April 5th before repeating the dose in the Easter Cup.

Unable to beat a single runner home in the Group 3 Show County Quality first-up on April 5th, the Kingmambo gelding finished a credible third in the Sportingbet Handicap (1600m) upon Winks’ return to the saddle on September 6th.

Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best odds on all Caulfield races this weekend including the Naturalism Stakes, for which Our Voodoo Prince is available at a generous quote of $7 for success.
