Disclaimer made a slow start to his racing career in Australia and missed the placings in his first five starts, but relished the step-up to 2300 metres in the Newcastle Gold Cup and was too strong for his competition in the final stages of the race.

Co-trainer Peter Snowden said that it had taken him a while to work out the right way to train Disclaimer and was thrilled that his hard work with the Dansili gelding had led to a Group 3 victory.

“He was brought here and John (O’Shea) gave him his first prep out of quarantine and it is fair to say that he was very light and he didn’t have much horse to work with,” Snowden said.

“He really did furnish whilst he was out and I have had the benefit of that good spell and he showed that today.

“It took me a while to work him out and I was a bit kind to him early and I just thought that he wasn’t a horse that you could work hard.

“He was a revvy type and I didn’t want to overcook him too early in a preparation, but from Wyong on I really stepped the work up and these horses really thrive on work.

“He is eating twice as much as he was before, he just feels like a different horse now and he is like a rock.”

Disclaimer was the last horse out of the gates in the Newcastle Gold Cup, but he was able to track into the race nicely and jockey Jason Collett settled the four-year-old into a lovely position just behind the speed, while Peter Moody-trained Wish Come True was trapped three wide.

The imported galloper responded well when asked for an extra effort from and he worked home strongly to record an impressive win from Brigantin and the unlucky Wish Come True.

“I thought that I was a bit of a smokey there from the way that he worked on the Saturday so I am pretty happy,” Collett said after the race.

“I was blocked for a bit of a run at the 600 there when I wanted to be out, but I was able to navigate a path underneath somebody else and I hadn’t gone for the stick yet and still felt like I had something left up my sleeve.”
