Waller Trio Heads 2014 George Main Stakes Field

Sydney’s premier trainer Chris Waller will saddle-up a three-pronged assault on the George Main Stakes 2014 at Royal Randwick on Saturday after running second in the race last year.

Twelve months ago the four time Sydney premiership winning horseman saddled up four hopes in the weight-for-age mile classic, one more than his trio among the 10 final acceptors for this weekend’s $350,000 Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m).

The best over the line behind last year’s George Main Stakes winner Streama was his 2013 Australian Oaks winner Royal Descent, the now five-year-old Redoute’s Choice mare back for another shot this year.

Royal Descent comes off two good seconds this season at the track, most recently behind stablemate Hawkspur when Waller prepared the first six over the line in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) on September 6.

She is drawn in barrier two for the weekend, having jumped from the inside alley in the Chelmsford, with Glyn Schofield replacing Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle.

McEvoy instead jumps aboard the Kris Lees-trained Lucia Valentina in barrier six.

Savabeel mare Lucia Valentina won the Group 1 Storm Queen Stakes (2000m) in April before her third in the Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m) and returned on Chelmsford Stakes Day to beat home Tiger Tees in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) in a fine effort.

Waller’s Chelsmford Stakes winner Hawkspur meanwhile also backs up in the George Main this weekend, the Purrealist gelding drawn in barrier four with Jim Cassidy to ride.

Royal Descent and Hawkspur then are joined by stable mate Sacred Falls who has the inside alley with Zac Purton engaged for the ride.

A dual Doncaster Mile winner, known mudlark Sacred Falls has run fourth in both of his new season runs including behind Hakwspur when beaten 1.5 lengths in the Chelmsford.

The other Group 1 winner in this year’s George Main Stakes field meanwhile is the Donna Logan-trained ATC Oaks champion Rising Romance.

Jumping from barrier seven with James McDonald in the saddle the New Zealand-trained daughter of Ekraar had her first run since the Oaks in the Tramway crossing fourth behind Lucia Valentina in a run she’ll improve on second-up.

Other notable hopes then include the Team Hawkes-trained Tramway third placegetter Toydini and Paul Messara’s last start Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality winning three-year-old Panzer Division.
