Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Sweynesse will follow a path to the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick on October 11 after he recorded a comfortable victory in the 2014 Spring Stakes at Newcastle this afternoon.
Jockey Kerrin McEvoy positioned Sweynesse towards the tail of the field in the early stages of the Spring Stakes and the undefeated colt worked into the race nicely before he finished over the top of the rest of the field in the final stages of the race, without being worked too hard by McEvoy, to record a maiden win at Stakes level from fast-finishing Pounamu and Monteux.
Sweynesse’s victory in the Spring Stakes was the first stakes win for Godolphin since they changed their branding from Darley at the start of the 2013/2014 racing season and Godolphin Racing Manager Jason Walsh was delighted to get the money off the operations back.
“It is a huge thrill,” Walsh said.
“It is the first stakes winner for Godolphin with a permanent presence in Australia and it is a huge thrill for the whole team.”
Sweynesse has now recorded three wins from as many race starts since he made his racing debut at Kembla Grange in May and Walsh is confident that the son of Lonhro has the talent to compete at Group 1 level during the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.
Walsh said that Sweynesse had proven that he was worthy of a tilt at a race like the Spring Champion Stakes, which Godolphin won with Complacent last year, and he believes that the three-year-old will continue to improve as he steps up in distance.
“He is a typical of the Lonhro’s; every time we raise the bar he jumps it,” Walsh said.
“We had the Spring Champion in mind for him and it was dependent on him performing at Stakes grade today, which he has done and done impressively.
“He is a really nice colt going forward.
“His mother was a very stout mare and there is plenty of staying blood there in the pedigree.
“2000 metres should pose no problems and he is a very exciting horse for us.”
