Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Today at Newcastle Racecourse two Group races will headline the opening day of the two-meeting Newcastle Cup Carnival including the Spring Stakes 2014 where the undefeated Sweynesse is the firming favourite.
Running as Race 6 at 4:05pm (AEST) this year’s $125,000 Group 3 Coca-Cola Spring Stakes (1600m) originally attracted a final field of 11 three-year-olds.
There are now 10 left in contention however following the early scratching of Turbo Street, with the John O’Shea-trained Sweynesse the clear favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au in from $2.80 to $2.60.
The Lonhro colt has won both of his career starts so far, most recently returning at Rosehill on August 30 to take out a Benchmark 70 over 1400m in the wet.
He sees a mile for the first time here as well as black-type company but is a classy type ready to step up in distance and grade.
Following Sweynesse in the Newcastle Spring Stakes odds are then three other single figure hopes with:
#11 High Above ($4.60) – Anthony Cummings-trained High Chaparral filly is drawn out wide but over the mile shouldn’t be an issue. She ran third to First Seal, subsequent runner-up to Sweynesse at Rosehill, on debut and then won over 1400m in the mud to defeat Northwest last month in a brilliant five length effort at Warwick Farm.
#4 Monteux ($5.50) – Peter Moody’s Medaglia D’Oro colt having his third start here after a won over Royal Ocean on debut at Bendigo last month, and then a brave second behind Hero I Am over 1580m at Canterbury on September 3. Hugh Bowman stays on and the mile should suit, only a nose away last time so expect improvement.
#2 Hampton Court ($9) – Gai Waterhouse-trained Redoute’s Choice colt to be ridden by Tommy Berry here who replaces Tim Clark. Clark was aboard last time out when this up-and-comer ran third to Sweynesse in the race the bookies are tipping the form of to hold up. Is a previous winner at Newcastle over 1400m back in March and is a multiple Group performer including an ninth to Nostradamus two back in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes at Rosehill.
Further down the Spring Stakes betting markets are then the likes of Chris Waller’s Northern Meteor colt Idyllic Scenery ($12) coming off a fourth to Sweynesse when beaten three lengths and Pounamu ($17) from Wyong in the outside draw after an upset in the set weights clash.
