Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
After opting to run his Chelmsford Stakes winner Hawkspur in the Group 1 at Royal Randwick this Saturday the state’s best trainer Chris Waller’s top chance in the 2014 Hill Stakes will be Multilateral.
The Mizzen Mast gelding is one of eight final acceptors making up the field for this weekend’s $200,000 Group 2 Ascend Sales Trophies Hill Stakes (2000m), the weight-for-age clash one of the key support races of George Main Stakes Day in Sydney.
Of those eight half come from the stables of Waller who also didn’t accept for Hawksupr, the Purrealist gelding instead taking them on in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) over a little less distance.
Waller’s top Hill Stakes acceptor then is another last stat winner, Multilateral drawn in the outside barrier with James McDonald to ride.
Last start the six-year-old enjoyed a half length win in the Listed Wyong Cup (2100m) and gets the chance to go back-to-back on the weekend.
Waller’s other three chances are then Moriarty (barrier seven), Bagman (barrier six) and Junoob (barrier four).
Clodovil seven-year-old Moriarty comes via a fifth place finish behind Hawkspur in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) on September 6, the Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup winner over 2200m from the winter tipped to improve later when stepped out over further than a mile.
Bagman also ran in the Chelmsford, the veteran eight-year-old backing up from back-to-back August wins in Melbourne to finish a close third with Brenton Avdulla retaining the ride for the weekend.
Blake Shinn then rides Junoob, the Haafhd gelding sixth in the Chelmsford second-up and looking to get back to his Group 3 winning form from the autumn.
Only three stables are represented in the Hill Stakes field this year then with David Payne and Team Hawkes both with dual acceptors to round out the line-up.
Payne will saddle up Honorius (barrier two) who is out to improve on a second last (11th) to Lucia Valentina in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) at the track a fortnight ago as well as his dual Group 1 winner Criterion (barrier five).
Sebring stallion Criterion had a brilliant three-year-old season during the autumn winning the Rosehill Guineas – ATC Derby double and was last seen running seventh in the Chelmsford.
Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes then have Chelmsford eighth placed Entirely Platinum jumping from gate three and La Amistad with the inside alley – jockeys for the duo to be confirmed.
A close relation to triple Melbourne Cup winning mare Makybe Diva, five-year-old Redoute’s Choice mare La Amistad failed her latest assignment when seventh to He’s Your Man in the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m) but remains in Spring Cups’ contention.
