The well-backed Hooked led from start to finish to return to winning form in the 2014 Cameron Handicap at Newcastle this afternoon.

Hooked had not recorded a race win since he took out the Goulburn Valley Handicap (1350m) at Doomben, but was very well-backed in the lead-up to the Group 3 event.

There was very little early pace in the Cameron Handicap and jockey Blake Shinn found himself in front on Hooked and he was able to control the race before racing away from the rest of the field in the final stages of the race.

Hooked will be one of hundreds of horses sold at the Patinack Farm dispersal sale at the Gold Coast on September 28 and an emotional John Thompson revealed after the Cameron Handicap that Hooked was the final runner in the history of Patinack Farm.

“He has been well deserved and he has been knocking on the door in very good races and probably just hasn’t got the job done,” Thompson said.

“That is our last runner and that is Patinack all done and dusted.

“It has been a bumpy road and it has been up and down.

“I won my first race here for him and my last as well.”

Hooked was likely having his last race start under the care of Thompson and he is set to be prepared by a another trainer after going through the sales ring at the end of the month, but Thompson is hoping that the four-year-old can continue to compete at the highest level throughout his racing career.

“He is a nice horse going forward,” Thompson said.

“He has raced at the top all his career and he has been around the money.

“Hopefully he goes on to bigger and better things for whoever buys him.”

Shinn has ridden Hooked in five of his past six starts, including his tough third behind Criterion in the Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m), and the leading hoop was thrilled to be able to record his first race win on the talented entire.

Shinn admitted that he was surprise to end up leading on Hooked, but paid credit to the acceleration that that the four-year-old was able to show off the slow tempo in the Cameron Handicap.

“I was very surprised, I thought I would land maybe third or fourth,” Shinn said.

“Once I got to the front I just had to take it up and dictate it as best I could.

“Full credit to the horse, he was very genuine and he let down strongly.

“It is great to see him breakthrough and it is well deserved.”
