Spillway Heads 2014 Naturalism Stakes Nominations

This Saturday trainers David Hayes & Tom Dabernig will run their progressive stayer Spillway in the Naturalism Stakes 2014 with the import chasing a ballot free ride in next month’s $3 million Group 1 Crown Golden Ale Caulfield Cup(2400m).

Offering a 2014 Caulfield Cup ballot exemption to the winner, this weekend’s $150,000 Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) is the key support race on Underwood Stakes Day in Melbourne and has attracted 20 nominations.

The headline entry is Rail Link four-year-old Spillway, the stallion equal $15 second favourite through Ladbrokes.com.au in their futures Caulfield Cup odds for the October 18 classic.

It’s a race the galloper is in danger of missing out on a start in however with Spillway currently sitting 36th on the Caulfield Cup order of entry with 52kg.

Hayes & Dabernig have also nominated for three others from their stables in this year’s Naturalism.

Their other Caulfield Cup hopes in the mix and outside the top 18 in the ballot are Stipulate (=39th), international Group 1 winning grey Crackerjack King (=92nd) and last start Moonee Valley winner over the 2040m Wrotham Heath (=96th).

Of those Stipulate is the next best of the stable mates in Caulfield Cup betting paying $26.

The British import returned to racing on August 30 at Caulfield Racecourse where the Dansili six-year-old returns on Saturday to win the Listed Heatherlie Handicap (1700m).

The other $26 Caulfield Cup chance in the mix on Saturday is then the Chris Waller-trained Our Voodoo Prince.

Forty-second on the ballot with 52kg, Our Voodoo Prince defeated a top field including the third placed Stipulate in the Group 3 Easter Cup (2000m) at Caulfield back in April during a stellar autumn campaign down under.

The now seven-year-old Kingmambo gelding has had two runs this time in, improving on a first-up last when ninth to Terravista in the wet at Randwick in the Group 3 Show County Quality (1200m) when up to a mile at Moonee Valley on a Good (3) track to run third behind St Jean on September 6.

Also nominated for the Naturalism Stakes for Waller this year are the 59kg top weight Moriarty and Junoob (57.5kg) who are both entered for the $400,000 Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at the meeting as well as is Our Voodoo Prince.

Another Caulfield Cup prospect paying $34 for the Group 1 in a month’s time through Ladbrokes.com.au racing in the Naturalism Stakes this weekend is then the Patrick Payne-trained Zanbagh.

Allocated just 50kg in the Caulfield Cup weights the Plumpton-based Bernardini mare desperately needs the ballot exemption.

She’s had two unplaced runs at Moonee Valley this season but is tipped to improve as last year’s Group 1 ATC Oaks third placegetter goes up in distance.

Other notable Naturalism Stakes hopes include the Jake Stephens-trained Balaklava Cup winner Gris Caro, Group 3 winner Entirely Platinum for Team Hawkes and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Bonfire coming off a second to stable mate Greatwood in the Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m) from August 30.

See below for the full Naturalism Stakes 2014 nominations and weights with the final field due for release on Wednesday.

Now then is the perfect time to lock in the juicy prices on offer at Ladbrokes.com.au in their all-in Caulfield Cup odds, markets set to firm with the Naturalism Stakes and Underwood Stakes results this weekend!
