Chris Waller’s fillies dominate the nominations...
Gai Waterhouse’s Grafton Cup winning mare Queenstown will be out to improve on a last start failure at Wyong this Thursday having been nominated for the Newcastle Gold Cup 2014.
The highlight of the two day Newcastle Cup Carnival, this year’s $175,000 Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m) has attracted 23 nominations with Queenstown sitting top of the ballot.
Allocated 56.5kg the daughter of Stratum carried half a kilo less last time out when suffering a nasty 11.5 length defeat in the Listed Wyong Cup (2100m) run on a Slow (7).
Over more distance on a firmer track Waterhouse is hoping the five-year-old can bounce back and return to the form that saw her win the Listed Grafton Cup (2350m) back in July.
Waterhouse has also nominated for Travolta (58.5kg) for Thursday, the Handsome Ransom six-year-old coming off an eighth in the Wyong Cup from September 5.
Wyong Cup winner Multilateral meanwhile also backs up in the Newcastle Gold Cup shooting for a provincial cups double for trainer Chris Waller.
The imported Mizzen Mast six-year-old won the race by half a length over Canny Ballard carrying the 54kg minimum and also rises in the weights then up two kilos to 56kg.
Waller has a total of three Newcastle Gold Cup nominees this year having also entered his Sydney Cup fourth placed veteran Brigantin (58kg) and Winter Cup winning gelding Secessio (57kg).
The form around Konigstiger six-year-old Secessio is very good too as he backed up from his Winter Cup win over 2400m in June to run second to Queenstown in the Grafton Cup.
He was also third last time out behind stable mate Multilateral in the Wyong Cup carrying 56.5kg.
The Newcastle Gold Cup weights meanwhile are topped by the Joe Pride-trained Destiny’s Kiss with 59kg.
Power Of Destiny six-year-old Destiny’s Kiss had the same weight in the Wyong Cup when sixth, before which the Stayers Cup winner was fifth to Mr Chard in the Rowley Mile.
Pride has also nominated his Wyong Cup runner-up Canny Ballad (55kg), the Albury Cup winner out to go one better than last time out after finding form when stepped up in distance.
Other notable Newcastle Gold Cup nominees include the Peter Moody-trained Tattersall’s Cup runner-up from the winter Wish Come True, last weekend’s Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes runner-up Kingdoms for Brisbane’s Brian Smith, Queensland Cup winner Iggi Pop and Bede Murray’s 63-start veteran World Wide.
See below for the full Newcastle Gold Cup nominations, the field due for release shortly.
