Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Revealing he was unpleased with the work of the talented four-year-old leading into his impressive victory in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield two weeks ago, trainer Peter Moody is thrilled with the condition of Dissident ahead of this afternoon’s featured Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington.
Contesting a commendable total of four wins and five minors from just 14 competitive starts so far, Dissident jumped from the gates well in the 2014 Memsie Stakes, settling well within the pack before displaying a superior turn of foot in the final straight to finish nearly three lengths in the clear of closest rival Sweet Idea.
Understandably thrilled to have claiming a second Group 1 victory with the Sebring entire first-up Moody told Racing Victoria he is confident a far-firmer track for the Makybe Diva Stakes and increased running distance will play directly into the strengths of Dissident this afternoon.
“It’s no secret his gallop leading into the Memsie, I wasn’t overly pleased with,” Moody said.
“He got a bit lost and was still on his Sydney leg and he struggled on the soft ground.
“The tracks have firmed up nicely in the past couple of weeks and his work has really pleased us, so much so on Tuesday morning it was probably as nice a piece of work as he has produced.
“I’m not sure whether to take positives or negatives away from that but he looks a picture, he’s very happy and healthy so we can’t fault him.”
Stamping his claims as one to watch from his maiden racing preparation through the autumn of 2013, which included a strong third placing in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1200m) and credible seventh in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) most notably, Dissident continued to impress through the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival in finishing second in each of his first three starts including the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m), and finishing fourth in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m).
Returning for second in the Listed Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m) on February 15th this year, the stallion out of Diana’s Secret returned to the winner’s circle in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) before breaking through for a maiden victory at the highest level of Australian racing in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) most notably on March 15th.
