Chautauqua Overcomes Classy Field in Bobbie Lewis Quality

Jumping from the gates well, Chautauqua settled off the pace of early leaders Sistine Demon, Flamberge and Sea Lord, who set a notably quick tempo over the first 700m of the Bobbie Lewis Quality.

Slowly building in momentum, the Encosta De Lago gelding the took up the pace 200m from home, comfortably pulling clear to finish more than two lengths in the clear of veteran gelding Temple Of Boom; In Cahoots running on for third.

Jockey Dwayne Dunn delivered a sensational ride on Chautauqua at Flemington this afternoon, and was pleased with the four-year-olds ability to maintain after hitting the lead earlier than expected.

“He’s got a bit of attitude and we always knew he was a really nice horse and today he really launched off the back of them” Dunn said following the Bobbie Lewis Quality.

“He just towed me really solidly to the 400 and when I came out he went that quick I sort of got there a little too soon, but he finished the race off the way you’d really like.

“Obviously he wants further than what you’ve seen today but it was a very good win.”

Owner Rupert Legh was on hand for Chautauqua’s Bobbie Lewis Quality win, outlining the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) in October as likely to figure as the major target this time in.

John’s (Hawkes, trainer) always had a massive opinion of the horse,” Legh said following the race.

“You know what it’s like in the spring; you’re racing against the best of the best and we’ve got over stage one.

“We still think he’s capable of a Group 1, so at this stage we want to go up to a mile, target the Epsom or maybe the Emirates, one of those.”
