Catkins was settled in an excellent position just behind the leaders in the early stages of the race Sheraco Stakes and she kicked well clear of the rest of the field when asked by jockey Hugh Bowman for an extra effort.

Trainer Chris Waller admitted after the race that he was very confident heading into the Sheraco Stakes, but he said that he was still revealed to see the Dubawi filly get the job done in the Group 3 event this afternoon.

“You still have to see them do it at the finish and I was nervous,” Waller said.

“These better horses and the horses that you are very close to you take the wins and the loses with them and it was good to see her surge away as she did.

“It is just a privilege to be training her for the Inghams and on the back of Red Tracer I am a very lucky trainer.”

Catkins started her autumn preparation with two comfortable wins in the Group 2 Breeders Classic (1200m) and Group 3 Wiggle Stakes (1400m), but she was unable to record her maiden race win in either the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) or Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m).

Waller is yet to decide on the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival path that Catkins will follow and he admitted after the race that he is unsure whether the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) over a mile is the right race for the six time Group winner.

“Hughie actually said to me before the race that he is not sure whether the mile is her distance and she could be a better sprinter or 1400 metre type horse, so we will take a bit of thought into that because she just lost her way a little bit in the autumn,” Waller said.

Waller will have a chance to score another Group win this afternoon when Sniper Fire contests the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes, while Bowman is on leading contender Hallowed Crown in the Group 1 event.
