2014 Makybe Diva Stakes Results: Dissident Makes It Two In A Row

Talented entire Dissident recorded his second straight win at Group 1 level with a brave victory in the 2014 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington this afternoon.

Dissident started the 2014 Makybe Diva Stakes as a clear favourite and he was settled just behind the leader Messenein the early stages of the race, with the leading duo establishing a six lengths gap between themselves and the rest of the field.

The Sebring entire hit the front at the top of the straight and looked as though he was going to be a sitting duck when the likes of Boban, Fawkner and Puissance De Lune all loomed on his outside.

2013 Caulfield Cup winner Fawkner appeared to get his nose in front of Dissident at the 200 metre mark, but Dissident was too strong in the final stages of the race and hung on to score his third victory at Group 1 level.

Jockey Ben Melham has now had two rides on Dissident for two Group 1 victories and he praised the toughness that the four-year-old showed when he was challenged by Fawkner in the final stages of the Makybe Diva Stakes.

“He is a really good colt this horse,” Melham said.

“He had a really nice run outside the leader, Fawkner headed him halfway up the run and he had to dig deep and deserved to win.

“He is pretty good out of the barriers and he can take a position early, lay off the bridle for you and he has an excellent turn-of-foot for you when you need it.”

Trainer Peter Moody was not at Flemington to soak up another Group 1 victory, with the leading trainer in Sydney looking after Golden Rose contenders Better Land and Bring Me The Maid, but his Racing Manager Jeff O’Connor said that the entire stable were delighted with the tough performance of Dissident.

“This is the second Group 1 that he has won at this trip when he has had to tough it out,” O’Connor said.

“He never gives up and he had a good one hunting him down, so it was a pleasing result.”

The Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) has always been on the agenda for Dissident, but Moody is still unsure whether the Sebring entire can run out a strong 2000 metres after he failed to fire in the Rosehill Guineas earlier this year.

“I don’t think we learnt a lot; whether he is a Cox Plate horse or more effective at a mile,” O’Connor said.

“I am hoping that I can get some help from Pete here in a text message, but nothing is coming through.

“Pete has to have a good thing about whether he can train the horse to run that trip.”
