The 2014 Makybe Diva Stakes is the major race on the stacked Flemington card this weekend and is a very intriguing betting race.
The Makybe Diva Stakes was once considered a lead-up race to events like the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup, but it has now become a genuine Spring Racing Carnival target in its own right after it was upgraded to Group 1 status last year.
Dissident ($3) is a clear favourite in 2014 Makybe Diva Stakes betting markets after he stamped himself as a genuine weight-for-age contender with a most impressive win in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) and trainer Peter Moody believes that the Sebring entire will be even better suited in the Makybe Diva Stakes.
Dissident may be slightly under the odds in the Makybe Diva Stakes and Ladbrokes.com.au is giving you some insurance if you want to take on the favourite by refunding bets if you selection is beaten by the starting price favourite.
Boban ($4.20) had no luck when fifth in the Memsie Stakes, but he still hit the line well and will be returning for Flemington for the first time since he won the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) in impressive fashion during the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.
Puissance De Lune ($6) was narrowly beaten by Foreteller in the Makybe Diva Stakes last year and is on the third line of betting to go one better in 2014 after he returned to a semblance of his best form in the Memsie Stakes.
Messene failed to fire in the Memsie Stakes, but he is still available at Makybe Diva Stakes odds of $8, while P.B. Lawrence Stakes runner-up Spillway has been of the best-backed runners and is into a quote of $9.50.
Can Dissident win his second Group 1 event on the trot or will he fail to recapture his Memsie Stakes form? Our team of racing experts have analysed the form to come up with our 2014 Makybe Diva Stakes tips.
2014 Makybe Diva Stakes Tips
#3 Boban ($4.20)
Boban has performed well in his two race starts this preparation and he is set to peak third-up in the Makybe Diva Stakes. The son of Bernardini has won the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) and Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) third-up in his last two racing preparations and he is unbeaten over a mile since he joined the Waller stable. The long Flemington straight will suit and he won’t be caught three wide again after drawing ideally in barrier four.
#8 Spillway ($9.50)
Spillway is the best value runner in the Makybe Diva Stakes and he is great value at his current price of $9.50. The imported galloper was impressive first-up when second to Star Rolling in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) and the step-up to 1600 metres should suit. There are question marks over the form coming out of the P.B. Lawrence Stakes, but the Rail Link entire is still over the odds at his current price.
#9 Dissident ($3)
Dissident was most impressive in the Memsie Stakes, but he is very short in Makybe Diva Stakes betting markets. The son of Sebring had all the favors in the Memsie Stakes and it is always tough for horses to replicate career-best performances that were achieved at the start of a preparation. I am happy to leave him out of my win selections at his current quote.
