Spillway Eyeing Cup Berth in Makybe Diva Stakes

Confirmed alongside ten leading contenders for this weekend’s Flemington featured, trainer David Hayes has revealed his is pleased with the progressing form of talented import Spillway ahead of the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m).

Securing a commendable total of four wins and five minor places from just 14 competitive starts, Spillway began his racing career under the guidance of British trainer Eve Johnson Houghton before transferring to the care of Hayes at the conclusion of 2013.

Displaying an exceptional turn of foot to finish second by a short head in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield first-up on August 16th, Hayes told The Daily Telegraph he is confident of another impressive performance from the Rail Link entire in the Makybe Diva Stakes, confirming the ballot-free entry into the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) in October that is offered to Saturday’s winner is the major reason for entry.

“I think he’ll run terrific,” Hayes said.

“We’re hoping he wins and gets 100 percent qualified for the (Caulfield) Cup. That would be great.”

Stamping his claims as one to watch with two unlucky placings over his two-start maiden preparation in late 2012, Spillway returned to the track in great form in 2013, claiming three impressive victories back-to-back and continuing to build in form and class on his way to third in the Group 3 Gordon Stakes (2414m), fourth amongst particularly classy competition in the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes (2414m) and fourth in the Group 3 Legacy Cup (2217m) in what was his final appearance in Britain on September 21st.

Steadily building to the task over three starts through autumn, the stallion out of Flower Market finished mid-pack in the Listed Golden Mile (1600m) first-up, and while unlucky to be blocked for a run and eighth in the Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) on April 5th, announced his arrival when jogging home to claim the Group 3 Japan Racing Association Plate (2000m) on April 26th.

Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best odds on the 2014 Makybe Diva Stakes, for which Spillway is available at a generous quote of $9.50 for success.
